Job Description:

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technologist

The Town of Saugeen Shores’ Department of Public Works and Engineering is seeking a GIS Technologist who will be responsible for a broad range of GIS-related duties within a municipal government setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

GIS MAPPING AND PROGRAMMING

  • Create maps for all departments as required

  • Develop models to assist in strategic calculations

  • Use Scripting language for efficient workflows

  • Use GPS survey equipment and its supporting software

DATA

  • Compile and organize data from maps, database and other sources

  • Create and maintain metadata

  • Import, export and convert data within the GIS

  • Perform spatial analysis

  • Maintain up-to-date information about the newest GIS technology and software advances

  • Analyze, query and run reports on GIS data

  • Database management for spatial and related data

MOBILE APPLICATIONS

  • Develop and implement mobile applications using ESRI software for internal and external use

  • Explore the potential of ‘Smart Community’ technologies

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED JOB SKILLS

  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical and presentation skills

  • Leadership skills

  • Excellent English language oral and written communication skills

  • Comfortable with self-direction as well as working in a team environment

RECOMMENDED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in GIS or a related discipline with a minimum of 5 years working experience

  • Demonstrate a willingness for continued education and training

KNOWLEDGE

  • This job requires thorough knowledge of the use of computer software including Microsoft 2010, ArcGIS 10 desktop suite of products as well as AutoCAD

  • Experience with spatial imagery and LiDAR is considered an asset

  • General knowledge of municipal operations and a thorough knowledge of department operations

  • Good organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload;

  • Thorough knowledge of office equipment and procedures

  • Understanding of Workplace Health and Safety Programs

  • Knowledge of municipal infrastructure is considered an asset

 

2017 salary: $63,996 – $72,723 (35 hours per week)
