Wildfire Geospatial Analyst

Job Description:

The Wildfire Geospatial Analyst supports the Wildfire Management Branch geospatial data coordinator in support of all activities requiring spatial data. This position is responsible for making base mapping, land use and natural resource inventory data available in a format suitable for use in the departmental business systems, other government of Alberta Ministries, the Government of Canada, and private industry, according to identified stakeholder requirements.

Reporting to the Wildfire Resource Information Unit Lead, this position will be responsible for the following:

- Participate in operational support for the conversion, update, maintenance and loading of fire specific data, base mapping data, land-use and natural resource inventory data into provincial spatial data repositories;
- Perform complex spatial analysis and geo-processing to provide Department staff with useful information to aid in decision making;
- Provide technical expertise in the appropriate use of fire specific data, base mapping, land-use and natural resource inventory spatial data in automated decision support applications within the department;
- Develop, implement and maintain data standards, quality control procedures and guidelines for the conversion and loading of fire specific data, base mapping data, land-use and natural resource inventory data into provincial spatial data repositories, according to stakeholder requirements;
- Provide custodial role for spatial data to all GIS users in the Branch to users outside the Branch for several specific data sets;
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of Fire Behaviour Prediction (FBP) fuel type inventory data sets and all data sets related to them; and
- Work on the Branch's Mobile Mapping Program

Job Requirements:

Qualifications
    
Advanced diploma in GIS or a related field, plus a minimum of six years' of related experience (i.e. application of GIS principles, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and other related experience). Experience with Python script creation is also required. Experience with using the ESRI suite of products, relational database systems and with ArcSDE is considered an asset. Experience or an understanding of forestry activities and practices, specifically related to wildfire management will also be considered an asset. Equivalencies will be considered.

    
Salary
    
$2,595.71 - $3,408.45 bi-weekly
($67,748 to $88,960 per annum)
    
Notes:
    
As travel may be required in this position, you must be eligible for a Class 5 Driver's License.
