SUMMARY:Peterborough GoGeomatics Geocaching Adventure - Year end!
DESCRIPTION:Let’s go GeoCaching! Rather than meet in a dark bar and talk about geomatics lets meet up and go geocaching. Not only that lets make some new geocaches for others to find. \nTo start we will meet at our regular location at 180 Hunter. From there we will sort out our new caches and discuss our choices over a beverage and where we will put them on our adventure. We need to be clever so that they are challenging to find and of interest to the future cacher. From there we will set out to find our first cache and place our first cache. More details to come closer to the date! I am really looking forward to going on this adventure with all of you. If it is raining we will schedule a new date and just have a regular inside meeting.

SUMMARY:Ottawa GG: Geoff Zeiss Talk: Mapping Underground Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:GoGeomatics Ottawa hosts world renowned location technology expert: Geoff Zeiss. \nGeoff Zeiss has more than 20 years experience in the geospatial software industry and 15 years developing enterprise geospatial solutions for the utilities\, communications\, and public works industries. His particular interests include the convergence of BIM\, CAD\, geospatial\, and 3D. Geoff received the Geospatial Ambassador Award at Geospatial World Forum 2014. \nHis talk for the group is “Mapping Underground Infrastructure: The next Frontier of Remote Sensing” \nAbstract: The next frontier in remote sensing technology is mapping below ground including geology and utility and transportation infrastructure. The biggest source of highway construction project delays are unknown or inaccurately known underground utility infrastructure. Utility hits cost the U.S. economy an estimates $1.5 trillion in direct costs annually and many times that in indirect costs. The latest remote sensing technologies for geolocating underground infrastructure are making it easier to map underground infrastructure and the development and improvement of standards for sharing underground infrastructure location information has been initiated by the OGC\, ASCE\, and others. \nWe hope you will join us for the talk. As always GoGeomatics socials are fun free networking events.

SUMMARY:March Social - with guest Dr George Bevan!
DESCRIPTION:George Bevan currently teaches in the Dept. of Geography and Planning at Queen’s. He has worked extensively in Jordan\, Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia in recent years to implement new workflows for mapping cultural-heritage assets. He will be discussing a project funded by the USAID’s Sustainable Cultural Heritage Through Engagement of Local Communities Project (SCHEP) that builds local capacity in Wadi Rum\, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Jordan. The project trains locals to use mobile GIS data collection workflows — ESRI Collector and Survey 123 –to record the stability of rock-art panels using the Rock Art Stability Index (RASI)\, an innovative scoring system that accounts for both human and natural factors in rock-art decay\, and is expressly designed for use by non-specialists. George will share some of his experiences implementing multi-lingual (English and Arabic) GIS workflows in this remote area. \nThe Kingston GoGeomatics Group meets every month to talk about GIS\, remote sensing surveying\, technology\, education\, training\, jobs\, and much much more! SUMMARY:OpenStreetMap: Traces of the Past exploring the Maps and History of Vimy Ridge
DESCRIPTION:GoGeomatics is proud to present one of our own to give a talk at the March GoGeomatics social. Bert de Brujin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/bertdebruijn/) is one of Canada’s most innovative and dedicated entrepreneurs. His passion for military history\, education\, and open source software have driven him to create WikiWar. \nWikiWar (http://wikiwar.net/) is a project to structure and geovisualize the entirety of human military history using OpenStreetMap. Today\, OpenStreetMap contributors follow some simple mapping rules when adding to the modern map\, including what is called the “ground rule”: map the world as it can be observed by someone physically there. But what if you aren’t interested in the world as it exists today? What if you want to see the world digitally as it was observed a long time ago? \nFollow along as members of the Muninn and WikiWar projects use the OpenStreetMap toolset to create a historically-accurate digital map of the Vimy Ridge area in time for the 101st anniversary of the famous WWI battle of the same name.

SUMMARY:February Meetup (in March) - Professors Take the Stage!
DESCRIPTION:We will be having Dr. Paul Treitz from Queen’s University Department of Geography and Planning speaking Arctic applications for remote sensing. Arctic ecosystems account for a large proportion of Canada’s land surface and are important systems within the context of global climate change and environmental change research. These northern environments are thought to be particularly sensitive to changes in climate\, yet it remains unclear as to how tundra ecosystems will respond. For instance\, it is estimated that temperatures have increased on average by 3-4 degrees in the Canadian Arctic over the past half century and will continue to exceed global mean warming. As a result\, changes in Arctic tundra ecosystem patterns and processes will be expressed through permafrost degradation\, shifts in vegetation phenology and species composition and abundance. In addition to the obvious impacts of increasing air and soil temperatures\, there are a number of factors that serve as controls on vegetation growth in the Canadian Arctic\, including soil moisture\, nutrient availability\, soil type and topography/micro-topography. \nOur research in the Canadian High Arctic examines the potential for high spatial resolution remote sensing data (optical and synthetic aperture radar) to quantify biogeophysical variables that control carbon fluxes at landscape (i.e. watershed) scales. To examine these patterns and processes\, in situ studies are conducted in order to calibrate and validate remote sensing models at high spatial resolution. Variables of significance for productivity modeling and estimating net ecosystem exchange include above-ground phytomass\, percent vegetation cover\, fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation and soil/surface moisture and permafrost degradation. These are critical environmental\, structural and physiological variables linked to many ecosystem processes (e.g.\, phytomass information plays a significant role in assessing carbon stocks\, is an important element in global change and productivity models\, and is a measure of vegetation community structure which influences biodiversity). In this presentation\, I will present the results of our remote sensing research at study sites on Melville Island and Boothia Peninsula\, Nunavut. \nThe Kingston GoGeomatics Group meets every month to talk about GIS\, remote sensing surveying\, technology\, education\, training\, jobs\, and much much more! We welcome everyone in all areas of geomatics and look forward to seeing you there! \nPlease RSVP to let us know you’re attending. \nGoGeomatics Canada Sites and Social Media:Web: www.gogeomatics.ca (http://www.gogeomatics.ca/)Twitter: @GoGeomatics (https://twitter.com/gogeomatics)Linkedin Group: http://goo.gl/xD550Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoGeomaticsCanada
