SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Ottawa Archaeology & Geospatial Social
DESCRIPTION:Join GoGeomatics Ottawa this March for some Roman Archaeology and GIS. \nTitle: ‘Seeing the Old with the New: The Advancing World of GIS\, History\, and Archaeology‘ \nThe relationship between history and GIS has existed in various fashions for years\, yet it has been in the last two decades where these conjoined fields have expanded exponentially. GIS has allowed old things to be seen in new ways from rediscovering lost settlements with remote sensing\, to recreating ancient cities in 3D design programs. \nFor his talk on this subject\, Alan will be discussing some historical projects that he completed and continues to work on since transitioning into geomatics with a focus on 3D reconstructions of ancient cities and geostatistical analysis of pottery artifacts from an archaeological dig outside of Rome. Alan will conclude with leading into where and in what way history and GIS can continue to work together now\, and into the future.

SUMMARY:Ottawa GG: Geoff Zeiss Talk: Mapping Underground Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:GoGeomatics Ottawa hosts world renowned location technology expert: Geoff Zeiss. \nGeoff Zeiss has more than 20 years experience in the geospatial software industry and 15 years developing enterprise geospatial solutions for the utilities\, communications\, and public works industries. His particular interests include the convergence of BIM\, CAD\, geospatial\, and 3D. Geoff received the Geospatial Ambassador Award at Geospatial World Forum 2014. \nHis talk for the group is “Mapping Underground Infrastructure: The next Frontier of Remote Sensing” \nAbstract: The next frontier in remote sensing technology is mapping below ground including geology and utility and transportation infrastructure. The biggest source of highway construction project delays are unknown or inaccurately known underground utility infrastructure. Utility hits cost the U.S. economy an estimates $1.5 trillion in direct costs annually and many times that in indirect costs. The latest remote sensing technologies for geolocating underground infrastructure are making it easier to map underground infrastructure and the development and improvement of standards for sharing underground infrastructure location information has been initiated by the OGC\, ASCE\, and others. \nWe hope you will join us for the talk. As always GoGeomatics socials are fun free networking events.

SUMMARY:NRCan/CCMEO Presents Gov Open Maps Portal at April GoGeomatics Networking Social
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Moore is the Project Manager of the Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP). (The biggest thing in open data in Canada!) \nTwo years ago Andrew Moore gave us a talk on the planned Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP) initiative. It’s live now! \nThat being said\, GoGeomatics has invited Andrew back to update us on the FGP and the Open Government Mapping Portal. He will discuss the technology\, data\, work that has gone into creating Canada’s open geospatial hub\, and the lessons learned. \nJoin us for this fun free networking event where we share a drink and talk about spatial tech. \nWhat is the FGP? \nThe FGP is an initiative of the Federal Committee on Geomatics and Earth Observations (FCGEO)\, a group of 21 federal departments and agencies that are producers and/or consumers of geospatial data\, or have an interest in geomatics-related activities\, requirements and infrastructure. The FGP supports the Open Government initiative and supports the evolution of the open data portal. Through collaboration and integration with open.canada.ca (http://open.canada.ca/en)\, the FGP will help Canadians through enhanced search\, visualisation and access to open geospatial data.

SUMMARY:OpenStreetMap: Traces of the Past exploring the Maps and History of Vimy Ridge
DESCRIPTION:GoGeomatics is proud to present one of our own to give a talk at the March GoGeomatics social. Bert de Brujin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/bertdebruijn/) is one of Canada’s most innovative and dedicated entrepreneurs. His passion for military history\, education\, and open source software have driven him to create WikiWar. \nWikiWar (http://wikiwar.net/) is a project to structure and geovisualize the entirety of human military history using OpenStreetMap. Today\, OpenStreetMap contributors follow some simple mapping rules when adding to the modern map\, including what is called the “ground rule”: map the world as it can be observed by someone physically there. But what if you aren’t interested in the world as it exists today? What if you want to see the world digitally as it was observed a long time ago? \nFollow along as members of the Muninn and WikiWar projects use the OpenStreetMap toolset to create a historically-accurate digital map of the Vimy Ridge area in time for the 101st anniversary of the famous WWI battle of the same name.
