SUMMARY:National Geomatics Competition
DESCRIPTION:The National Geomatics Competition (NGC) is a student-led consulting engineering competition in the field of geomatics. Our focus is to bring together students\, academia and industry representatives from across the country. \nThe goals for the NGC are : \n\nIncrease the visibility of the geomatics profession and of the respective programs in Canadian universities\nConnect industrial knowledge with students’ skills and academic research\nLearn and contribute to this fast-growing sector\n\nThe NGC hosts teams of undergraduate students from schools all across Canada. These teams are presented with a problem dealing with  various aspects of geomatics\, and must come up with a solution to the problem. The teams present their solutions in front of a panel of judges\, consisting of industrial and academic experts in the industry. Social activities\, technological demos and conferences on the most recent updates from the industry are scheduled throughout the weekend.

SUMMARY:URISA BC Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 11th\, 2024 for URISA BC’s one day conference to see how organizations are using GIS technologies to meet the very fluid demands put upon them by local events and legislation. \nLocation: Hilton Vancouver Metrotown in Burnaby\, B.C. \nAre you ready to embark on a journey into the dynamic world of Geographical Information Systems (GIS)? Join us for the upcoming conference\, “The Ever-Shifting Landscape: Adapting to Change Using GIS\,” where professionals\, researchers\, and GIS enthusiasts will converge to explore the latest trends\, innovations\, and strategies in the ever-evolving field of GIS. \nPolitical and policy change is happening all around us\, sometimes at alarming rates. GIS can be the backbone to help guide decisions that affect us all and needs to be involved from day 1\, before it’s too late. GIS can help facilitate policy decisions (for example\, housing densification) using the knowledge and power that it contains. Speakers will dive into real-world examples of how they are using GIS to help their governments build policy and make decisions. \nClimate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. At this conference\, we’ll delve into the realm of GIS applications focused on climate resilience and adaptation. Witness how GIS technologies empower decision-makers to monitor and manage the impacts of climate change\, fostering adaptive strategies for a sustainable future. \nAs GIS technologies advance\, so do the ethical considerations. Participate in conversations about privacy\, data ownership\, and the responsible use of geospatial information. Be part of the dialogue on ensuring that GIS is a force for good\, with ethical principles guiding every step. \nDon’t miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with GIS experts\, thought leaders\, and fellow enthusiasts. Register now to secure your spot at “The Ever-Shifting Landscape: Adapting to Change Using GIS” conference. Let’s explore\, learn\, and adapt together as we navigate the exciting terrain of GIS. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Efficient Geospatial Data Access with NASA's AppEEARS
DESCRIPTION:ASA’s Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS) is a powerful web application and application programming interface (API) that provides intuitive access to more than 100 geospatial datasets from multiple federal agencies\, including datasets at several NASA Distributed Active Archives Centers (DAACs). This webinar showcases AppEEARS and its capabilities and highlights AppEEARS resources to help simplify data access workflows using the system. \nThrough AppEEARS\, users can precisely extract data for point locations or areas of interest for specified variables and time ranges\, resulting in streamlined access to needed data and a significant reduction in download volumes. AppEEARS also brings efficiency to scientific workflows through its ability to reformat and reproject outputs. The web application offers built-in exploratory data visualizations for users to gain insights into the data prior to downloading\, while the AppEEARS API provides programmatic use of AppEEARS functionality for users who prefer working from a programming environment. AppEEARS outputs are staged in NASA’s Earthdata Cloud and are available for download and direct access from AWS US-West-2.

SUMMARY:BePrepared BeSpatial 2024
DESCRIPTION:Technological developments in recent years are nothing short of remarkable. Geospatial disciplines are evolving along with many of the technological changes that present growth opportunities for individuals and businesses. Some of the developments\, such as Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twins represent a quantum leap forward in the way we access\, interact and use information. \nTo stay relevant in the field\, geospatial and information professionals should “BePrepared”. \nThey should be aware of how these technological developments and trends can be applied to their work\, continually learn new skills and adapt to the ever-changing work environment. \nGeospatial plays a crucial role in many industries and is also impacted by technological breakthroughs that are affecting designing and creating business solutions. Some of the skills the geospatial industry requires are: \n\nCreative systems thinking\nAnalytical skills\nBig Data\, Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence\nUnderstanding of ethical and privacy concerns\nService orientation and customer service\nRemote Work and Collaboration\n\nThe 2024 Annual General Meeting virtual conference BePrepared (May 1st and 2nd\, 2024) will provide an opportunity for geospatial and information professionals to showcase their achievements\, and best practices and discuss challenges in preparing for and adapting to the predicted and unpredicted changes in future. \n

SUMMARY:Canadian Hydrographic Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:The CHA has a long-standing partnership with The Hydrographic Society of America\, and the two organizations take turns hosting this annual international conference series. This year it is Canada’s turn\, and we are excited to build upon the great success of US Hydro 2023 by organizing CHC2024 to be held in St. John’s\, Newfoundland and Labrador. \nWe have chosen “Unveiling our Blue Planet” as the theme of CHC2024.  With important international initiatives underway\, including the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the Nippon Foundation/GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project\, the requirement to better understand the ‘blue’ part of our planet is gaining much-needed attention. And while many advances continue to be made in the hydrographic discipline\, much remains to be accomplished\, as the richness and applications of hydrographic data expand and the artificial boundaries between hydrography and other important disciplines fades. \nUnder our major theme\, we are highlighting five key factors that will steer and facilitate our work to advance hydrography: \n–            Understanding Climate Change\n–            The Blue Economy\n–            Partnering and Collaboration\n–            Technological Advances\n–            Education and Careers
