SUMMARY:Cloud-Native Geospatial Outreach Event
DESCRIPTION:Registration:\n\n\nClick to Register \n\n\n\n\nStart:\n\nTuesday\, 19 April 2022 08:00 EDT\n\n\n\nEnd:\n\nWednesday\, 20 April 2022 17:30 EDT\n\n\n\nEvent Description:\n\n\n  \nBackground\nCloud-native Geospatial is a new way of working with spatial data that is centered around a set of new standards (COG\, STAC\, Zarr\, COPC) focused on cloud-based access. The grassroots movement shares the mission of OGC – making location information Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, and Reusable (FAIR) – but leverages the cloud to radically simplify the effort needed to make geospatial data FAIR. Expanding on the success of the first Cloud-Native Geo Outreach Day we are gathering the wider community to share experiences and welcome new users to these exciting new developments. See the call for speakers blog post for additional information. \nWhy Does Cloud-Native Matter?\nCloud-native geospatial offers many benefits to location data users ranging from decreasing the burden on data providers\, to drastically lowering the costs of managing that data. Once the data is in the right cloud-native geospatial formats then it’s easy to tap into a rich ecosystem of platforms and tools without having to download large data files. This also increases the applicability of cloud-scale tools\, and magnifies the impact of geospatial insights to a solution. For more details on the vision see the Towards a Cloud-Native OGC post. \nAbout the Event\nThis two-day free virtual event on April 19th and 20th will bring together various cloud-native geospatial communities to share real-world experience and challenges\, and welcome in a next generation of users and contributors who will continue to expand the impact of this new approach. It will have an overview of COG\, STAC\, Zarr and COPC and their ecosystem of tools\, along with a number of lightning talks and tutorials. This event will be the precursor to a series of Cloud-Native Geospatial activities with the outcome of a large-scale OGC Initiative aimed to enable far more geospatial data to be FAIR.

This is driving an increased interest in the area of Infrastructure Asset Management (IAM)\, which in turn is providing an exciting opportunity for surveyors and other geomatics professionals to diversify on the basis of their geospatial expertise.\nIAM is a multi-disciplinary field of practice that brings together data on the condition and location of assets like roads\, utilities and buildings with analytics that assess how assets will age and wear under current and anticipated use patterns and environmental conditions. This information is then used to prioritize investment decisions to minimize total lifecycle costs while ensuring that end users receive consistent and quality service delivery.\nIn this presentation\, an overview of the principles of IAM is provided\, along with discussion of how IAM systems are put together in practice from a data gathering\, analytics and policy perspective. Many of the technologies which are driving advances in IAM have roots in the geomatics profession\, such as 3D laser scanners\, remote sensing\, GIS databases and least-squares and other prediction techniques and this presentation focuses on the geomatics and surveying underpinnings of this practice area. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10:30am – 12:00pm \n“Issues in Recent Court Cases: Indigenous title\, Shared natural boundary factors and Revisiting co-ordinates” \nPresenter: \nIzaak de Rijcke\, LL.M.\, OLS\, of the Ontario Bar and Yukon Bar (Ret.) \nSummary:  \nProfessional surveyors in Canada are good at adapting to change and new challenges. However\, remaining aware of trends in case law that will impact their professional and business activities is an important resource to have in meeting these challenges. The sheer volume of case law emanating from courts across Canada calls for proactive measures to “check in” periodically on trends and new developments in the law.\nIn the last five years there has been no shortage of new decisions – despite the impact of a pandemic which\, in many instances has meant trials\, hearings and appeals taking place by videoconference. In this workshop\, 3 issues are identified and briefly described\, with a high level explanation of what each one could mean for land surveyors across Canada. In addition to the workshop\, members will receive a short synopsis of the presentation and the cases reviewed for further discussion with colleagues and employees after the workshop is over. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMAY 13\, 2022: Professional Surveyors Canada\, Annual General Meeting (AGM) \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10:00am – 12:00pm \n“Annual General Meeting” \nPresenters: \nJordan Litke\, Chair \nGabriel Arancibia\, Vice Chair \nDarren Patkau\, Vice Chair & Treasurer \nMichelle DeCecco-Zuk\, Executive Director \nDave Gurnsey\, PLIC Chair \nAgenda:  \n\nWelcome & Opening Remarks\nBoard of Directors & Staff Changes  – Motion\nOngoing Initiatives & Achievements\nProfessional Liability Insurance Program\nFinancial Overview\n2021 Year End Financials  – Motion\nProposed 2022 Budget\nAppointment of accountant – Motion\nOpen Forum\nClosing Remarks

SUMMARY:The Canadian Cartographic Association annual conference
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Cartographic Association annual conference will be held online May 25-27\, 2022.\nWe live in a world with complex and intertwined social\, health\, economic\, demographic and natural challenges and opportunities\, as COVID-19\, wildfires\, drought and floods (among other occurrences) have demonstrated in just the past two years. While we are awash with technologies and platforms that continually produce new data on some topics\, data gaps remain concerning pressing issues. In addition\, we must consider quality of data and fitness for purpose when data are available\, and working with historical data that could provide context for many problems and discussions is often difficult. From concept to data collection to designing effective summaries and visualizations\, how do mapmakers focus themselves and their audience on the stories geospatial data can help us tell? How does cartographic design apply in the diverse contexts in which location and spatial relations can help us understand our environment? How are design principles applied (i) in the forums and platforms on which our maps now appear and (ii) with the expectations users bring to maps and location?

SUMMARY:2022 Canadian Hydrographic Conference (CHC2022)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Gatineau-Ottawa\n\n\nDear participants welcome to beautiful Gatineau-Ottawa region. It is an honour and a privilege for me to serve as Chairman of the 2022 Canadian Hydrographic Conference (CHC2022). CHC is the biennial conference hosted by the Canadian Hydrographic Association (CHA). It is the premier hydrographic conference in North America\, alternating yearly with the US Hydrographic Conference of The Hydrographic Society of America (THSOA)\, a friend and a partner. \nThis gathering is a pivotal occasion to meet players and stakeholders in hydrography from North America and worldwide. Today\, this gathering is located in Gatineau\, on the Ottawa River\, a tributary of the central part of the 3500 kilometres long navigation system Great Lakes – Gulf of St. Lawrence. The River portion\, and the Sea portion (also named Gulf of St. Lawrence)\, is recognized for the navigation challenges it offers. These challenges have resulted in Canada being known as a nursery for excellent ideas and hydrographic innovations leading and serving to guide the evolution of international standards. CHC2022 (www.chc2022.org) with its scientific program\, informative vendor displays\, and topical keynote speakers will provide you with numerous learning opportunities. During this four day event\, you will have the chance to discuss different issues related to hydrography. From dynamic objects to crowdsourcing\, to ASVs to hydrospace\, you will note the dynamic evolution leading to “A World transformed”. \nAlthough this will be an occasion to learn and do business\, make sure to take time to explore and visit this beautiful host region. Whether on the Quebec side or the Ontario side\, several interesting attractions await you. Gatineau\, known for its quality of life\, offers you\, among other things\, its Museum of Civilization and its magnificent National Park with its rivers\, lakes\, hiking and cycling trails. Ottawa\, Canada’s capital\, stands its legendary parliament in front of you and offers\, among other things\, a beautiful little central market\, several museums\, as well as the Rideau Canal\, a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. \nThis conference would not be possible without your support to the Canadian Hydrographic Association (CHA). A small group of volunteers run the CHA and work hard to keep it alive and offer you this great event every second year. The continuing success of this conference depends on you\, our existing and future members\, who take the time to pay your annual membership dues on our web site (www.hydrography.ca). It is a minimal amount of money\, but it keeps the wheels turning. In closing\, I wish you vibrant and lively discussions all week long. \nFinally\, take the opportunity to visit this very beautiful region\, extend your stay and take a vacation to visit Quebec and Ontario\, the two most populous provinces of Canada. Enjoy your week and let’s have a great conference!
