SUMMARY:Smart Cities & Communities: A Canadian Spatial Approach To Efficiency in Nova Scotia
DESCRIPTION:The Geomatics Association of Nova Scotia (GANS) is hosting an all-day professional development seminar titled\, Smart Cities & Communities: A Spatial Approach to Efficiency! Attend this event to learn more about your community’s smart resources and to network with other professionals or prospects in geospatial fields. \nWHEN: Tuesday\, November 26\, 2019 from 9:30am to 4:00pm \nWHERE: Halifax Central Library\, Spring Garden Road\, Halifax (Room 301) \nRegistration:\n\n GANS members – $60.00 \n Non Members – $75.00 \n\nEVENT DESCRIPTION: \nThe seminar will inform attendees on how cities and communities in the Maritimes are currently adopting and planning to adopt smart technologies via the Internet of Things (IoT) and spatial systems such as GPS receivers and GIS networks. Professionals that have contributed to such developments will share their experiences with solving work dilemmas through a spatial approach. We are hoping to explore and stimulate discussions on how organizations in different areas\, private or public\, for-profit or non-profit\, are using smart technologies to improve efficiency from a geospatial perspective. You will leave at the end of the day knowing more about the impact that spatial systems have on the efficiency of your community. \nPlease note that in an attempt to keep the registration fee as low as possible\, lunch will not be provided (though there are many terrific pubs and egansgansateries within easy walking distance of the library!). Act fast – space is limited! \nFor more information\, feel free to contact us by email at info@gans.ca. \nSPEAKER INQUIRIES: \nInterested in speaking? Do you have experience with interconnected smart sensors and / or applying a spatial approach to solve dilemmas in your work? We may also still be in need of presenters and invite you to contact us for more information by emailing info@gans.ca.

SUMMARY:The Open Geospatial Consortium Technical Committee Meeting - Banff Alberta
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for the 112th OGC Technical Committee meeting. This will be an amazing week with a broad range of meetings and topics being discussed. You don’t have to be an OGC member to attend an OGC meeting. Whilst some meetings will be member only\, many are open to anyone to attend and new voices are always welcome. \nVisit the event website here http://ogcmeet.org/ \nOGC standards are implemented worldwide to make it easier to rapidly integrate and mobilize location information and technologies to improve decision making. OGC standards also help reduce IT lifecycle costs by drastically reducing custom integration effort. By making it easier to integrate and apply diverse sources of location information\, OGC standards help make air travel safe\, improve weather predictions\, warn of imminent disasters\, respond to emergencies\, support city planning and operations\, and provide citizens and consumers with helpful mobile apps. \nOGC\, as a standard developing organization\, provides a stable baseline for innovation. Innovation and standards appear to be opposing ideas\, but\, the two ideas work together to prevent the extremes of technological stagnation and disorder. Standards bring order to the disarray of the implementations of new ideas and provides a baseline for innovation to flourish. That innovation\, in turn\, feeds the creation of new ccand updated standards. \nThis TC Meeting will be held at a conference facility with an attached hotel space. Attendees are encouraged to use the hotel room block or an additional fee of $60 CAD per day will be added to your registration. \nThe Banff Conference Centre room block is available until 8 August 2019 at: \nhttps://book.b4checkin.com/chameleon/banffcentre/rlp/OGC1909 \nRooms start at $190 CAD + taxes per night. \nThis is a conference facility\, your daily participation package includes: \n\nguestroom (single sleeping room – larger rooms are available)\nlunch\nam and pm breaks\ncampus-wide Wi-Fi\nphone calls across North America\naccess to Sally Borden Fitness and Recreation facilities\nparking\naccess and borrowing privileges at The Banff Centre library and archives\nand access to complimentary arts and programmed events when available.\n\n$190 Canadian dollars per night plus applicable taxes in effect at the time of the program\, including 2% TIF\, 4% ATL\, and 5% GST. SUMMARY:GANS Professional Development Day - Open Source Data and Software for Geospatial Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Open Data is defined as structured data that is machine-readable\, freely shared\, used and built on without restrictions.\nOpen and unrestricted access to data for public interest purposes\, particularly statistical\, scientific\, geographical\, and environmental information\, maximizes its use and value\, and the reuse of existing data in commercial applications improves time-to-market for businesses. \nIn 2009\, Open Data started to appear all over the web\, with various governments\, announcing new initiatives towards opening up public information. In 2011\, the Government of Canada launched the Open Data Portal\, to support the delivery of Federal Government data in machine-readable formats. \n\nOpen source software provides scalable solutions that can help avoid licensing costs\, can be customized for particular requirements\, and comes with support from a large geospatial developer community. \n\nMost people in the geomatics sector are aware of it or have heard about it\, yet many people still do not take advantage of it. \nCome for an introduction to freely available geospatial software and data\, and how people are using them in their geospatial professions! \n\n\nSources of free geospatial data\nFree software for geographic data manipulation and analytics\nData collection and compilation\nFree software to aid web publishing
