SUMMARY:HOT @ 10: Empowering Communities through Microgrants
DESCRIPTION:On its 10 year anniversary\, HOT is featuring four (4) microgrant projects in a community webinar on August 21\, 2020\, at 13:00 UTC.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nOSM Iraq: Creating maps that support humanitarian response amid ongoing conflict and natural disasters\, with a focus on training youth to map their surroundings and identify their needs. \nMap Makoko\, Nigeria: Trained women as drone pilots to map Makoko\, one of Africa’s largest slums\, to improve service delivery for residents. \nMental Health aWHEREness\, Philippines: Mapping\, training people how to map\, and building an evidence base to show government and policymakers where there is a lack of mental health resources available for those in need. \nOSM Cameroon: Created an open-source OSM based spatial data infrastructure for communities in different African countries. \n\n\nSince 2017\, HOT has been supporting local OpenStreetMap communities through Microgrants and Device Grants. Our aim is to support and strengthen local OpenStreetMap communities by providing these basics to key leaders who are transforming their communities through mapping.

SUMMARY:Virtual Map our Marshes
DESCRIPTION:The BC Wildlife Federation’s Wetlands Education Program presents Map our Marshes\, a free 1-day\, virtual workshop\, open to the public. Wetlands can filter water\, mitigate flooding\, and provide critical habitat to hundreds of species. Unfortunately\, wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate and need our protection. \nCome join us to learn about the different types of wetlands and how to protect them. This entry-level workshop will introduce you to the basics of wetlands and mapping\, using free software and your smartphone. \nUsing Zoom and other online applications\, the Wetlands Education Team will guide you through a workshop that is fun and engaging. Participants have the opportunity to explore and learn more about wetlands and mapping through interactive activities. \nThis workshop is best experienced using a desktop or laptop computer. A stable internet connection is strongly recommended. \nA secondary device (smartphone\, tablet) is required to fully participate in this workshop. \nFor more information\, you may contact:\nAlyssa Purse\, Wetlands Education Program Coordinator \n604-882-9988 ext 239\nalyssa.purse@bcwf.bc.ca \n  \nhttps://www.gifttool.com/registrar/ShowEventDetails?ID=2305&EID=28202&fbclid=IwAR0dv-HkNae933494k_kp74dkeTvZHSlAIvnGzNUpzhhxRB51ZVsvg856X8

SUMMARY:2020 Geoawesomeness Digital Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Maps for mass consumption: Doing it the right way\nThe role of contemporary cartography in bridging the gap between information and action\n\nBe it a pirate’s treasure map in literary fiction or a thinktank’s dramatic visualization of the spread of deadly diseases\, maps have always been an inherent part of gripping storytelling. Then\, why are more organizations not leveraging maps as a tool for more visual\, engaging content? This meetup will see map enthusiasts get together to discuss how businesses can use coherent and informative infographics to inform and advise their stakeholders efficiently and in a unique way.

SUMMARY:How to Save Time and Storage Space with Industry-Leading Imagery Compression
DESCRIPTION:It’s been 20 years since Hexagon released the Enhanced Compressed Wavelet (ECW) file format. In that time\, a lot has changed across the geospatial industry. Many novel\, and not so novel\, image storage strategies have come and gone. New data types like 3D and point-clouds have also appeared. But the one thing that has remained constant through all this change\, managing geospatial imagery and earth observation data is still a challenging and costly endeavor for many organizations. \nIn this webinar\, we’ll discuss how ECW continues to be the most efficient geospatial image file storage format for its unmatched ability to balance the demands of speed\, quality\, and size. \nJoin us as we discuss: \n\nSelecting storage formats for organizational efficiencies\nReducing storage requirements\, data duplication\, and unnecessary data translation\nPractical use cases and geospatial imagery compression strategies\nNew enhancements to ECW’s core technology and associated products\n\nSpeaker \nChris Tweedie\, Product Director\, Geospatial\, Hexagon \nhttps://www.directionsmag.com/webinar/10036
