SUMMARY:BePrepared BeSpatial 2024
DESCRIPTION:Technological developments in recent years are nothing short of remarkable. Geospatial disciplines are evolving along with many of the technological changes that present growth opportunities for individuals and businesses. Some of the developments\, such as Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twins represent a quantum leap forward in the way we access\, interact and use information. \nTo stay relevant in the field\, geospatial and information professionals should “BePrepared”. \nThey should be aware of how these technological developments and trends can be applied to their work\, continually learn new skills and adapt to the ever-changing work environment. \nGeospatial plays a crucial role in many industries and is also impacted by technological breakthroughs that are affecting designing and creating business solutions. Some of the skills the geospatial industry requires are: \n\nCreative systems thinking\nAnalytical skills\nBig Data\, Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence\nUnderstanding of ethical and privacy concerns\nService orientation and customer service\nRemote Work and Collaboration\n\nThe 2024 Annual General Meeting virtual conference BePrepared (May 1st and 2nd\, 2024) will provide an opportunity for geospatial and information professionals to showcase their achievements\, and best practices and discuss challenges in preparing for and adapting to the predicted and unpredicted changes in future. \n

SUMMARY:Canadian Hydrographic Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:The CHA has a long-standing partnership with The Hydrographic Society of America\, and the two organizations take turns hosting this annual international conference series. This year it is Canada’s turn\, and we are excited to build upon the great success of US Hydro 2023 by organizing CHC2024 to be held in St. John’s\, Newfoundland and Labrador. \nWe have chosen “Unveiling our Blue Planet” as the theme of CHC2024.  With important international initiatives underway\, including the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the Nippon Foundation/GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project\, the requirement to better understand the ‘blue’ part of our planet is gaining much-needed attention. And while many advances continue to be made in the hydrographic discipline\, much remains to be accomplished\, as the richness and applications of hydrographic data expand and the artificial boundaries between hydrography and other important disciplines fades. \nUnder our major theme\, we are highlighting five key factors that will steer and facilitate our work to advance hydrography: \n–            Understanding Climate Change\n–            The Blue Economy\n–            Partnering and Collaboration\n–            Technological Advances\n–            Education and Careers

SUMMARY:2024 National Forum on Earth Observation
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 National Forum on Earth Observation will be held from May 28 to 30 at the Canadian Space Agency’s John H. Chapman Space Centre in Longueuil\, Quebec\, and virtually. \nThe program will include plenary sessions and workshops. \nIn preparation\, we are undertaking a number of consultations with several stakeholder communities via preparatory meetings. The results will be discussed during the Forum. \nThe last EO Forum took place in October 2022. It brought together more than 300 participants from the Canadian EO community\, representing federal and provincial governmental departments\, academia\, and industry. \n\nObjectives\n\nUpdate Canadian EO stakeholders on what has been done since the last National EO Forum in 2022.\nObtain community guidance\, positioning and feedback on proposed consultation mechanisms.\nTake stock of current EO undertakings and achievements by the communities\, in order to include information in upcoming planning phases.\nFoster renewed networking between the various EO communities in Canada.\nFocus on biodiversity of ecological systems to highlight Canada’s national priority while the Canadian Space Agency serves as the 2023–2024 Chair of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites.

SUMMARY:Kelowna GoGeomatics Networking Social
DESCRIPTION:We will begin with a presentation in Meeting Room 3 of the library by Rachel Plewes on the project she did for her master’s thesis. \nHere’s a summary: \nLandscape Based Approach to Lake Management in Ontario’s Cottage Country (Muskoka) \nThe Muskoka lakes are an important part of Ontario’s cottage country. The lakes of the Muskoka River Watershed have experienced large water quality changes from natural and human-induced stressors. These stressors include acidification\, climate change\, invasive species\, and shoreline development. In 2012\, cumulative-effects approaches to lake management evolved using geospatial technologies. The presentation will discuss a landscape-based approach to lake monitoring in the Muskoka River Watershed. GIS is applied to better understand how stressors\, aquatic connectivity\, and scale influence water quality. \nFrom here\, we will go to BNA Brewing\, 1250 Ellis St.\, for a 6:45 reservation. \nGoGeomatics is a networking event to welcome students\, professionals\, and academics in the field of geomatics in a casual environment. \nCome out and have some drinks with other students\, peers and professionals. This group is open to everyone in any geomatics-related field–GIS\, surveying\, remote sensing\, photogrammetry\, CAD\, and more.
