Geomatics Opportunities for Canadians at the University of Glasgow

Canadian geomatics students should take note of this opportunity at the University of Glasgow.

In today’s high-tech, data-driven world, Geospatial Technology is amongst the leading advancements in modern technology. Combining Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS), location-based intelligence has revolutionised the way societal issues are faced. These range from local to global; from looking up real-time traffic information on your Smartphone, to managing and responding to a major natural disaster. A high-demand, multi-billion pound industry, this vast market presents enormous opportunity for students educated in a relevant subject.

Geospatial and Mapping Sciences from the University of Glasgow is an innovative, industry-sponsored program. Developed in close collaboration with employers to meet global demand for professionals in the field, it is designed to prepare students for a variety of careers in geomatics, including hydrographic surveying; land registration/cadastre and LIS; photogrammetric and remote sensing engineering and management of geospatial information. Meeting the academic requirements for membership of relevant professional bodies, the programme is further accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.

Offered both full-time or part-time as an MSc, PgDip or PgCert, the program is delivered through a means of lectures, seminars and tutorials, coupled with lab and group fieldwork. Core and optional courses include Remote Sensing, Terrain Modelling, Application development in GIS and Terrestrial laser scanning.

As Dr Jane Drummond, of the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences elaborates: “In response to an international shortage of Geomatics Surveyors, in 2007 employers and academics launched this accredited MSc in Geospatial and Mapping Sciences, building on existing 50-year industry-partnered, land-survey teaching. This programme not only provides a stimulating and dynamic academic and work environment, but responds to industry skills gaps, both domestically and globally.”

The Geospatial and Mapping Sciences program is available for entry from September 2014 in the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences at the University of Glasgow.
