Are you interested in using your planning expertise to support diverse, complex technical work involving a variety of business processes, programs and projects ranging in size and scope from small to large and multifaceted within a municipal land use environment? If so, read on! 
 
As the Planning Technician II, you will work with clerical, technical and professional staff, external consultants, as well as the general public. You will specialize in technical work applying ad vanced knowledge of computer applications in developing, maintaining and stewarding of corporate feature classes, the production of cartographic GIS-based maps, mapping and graphics for reports, committees/authorities, public notice and Council presentation material. 
 
Duties include: 
  • Prepare and provide technical materials to support Council reports, Council presentations, Public Meetings and associated Public Notices, as well as internal meetings 
  • Create maps, graphics and other related materials for inclusion in all zoning applications, statutory and non-statutory plans, resolutions and bylaw documents 
  • Make decisions on the graphics and legal maps to include in presentations that best represent the applications for Council Meetings 
  • Provide technical advice and recommendations, explain procedures and processes and maintain standards with respect to graphics and mapping activities 
  • Provision of technical materials to support subdivision authority documents 
  • Development, maintenance and stewardship of corporate feature classes and the production of cartographic GIS-based maps 
  • Create new and edit Department and Corporate SLIM data to be used in POSSE, on the City’s website, or to produce hard copy mapping 
  • Complete cartographic analysis to produce presentation materials or other unique planning assignments 
  • Maintain, update and troubleshoot Corporate feature classes as necessary, including investigating and resolving problems 
  • Import/Export GIS data using GeoMedia Professional software to other formats when required 
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to new and existing employees within the Department, Branch and Section 
  • Related duties as required
Qualifications

:

  • 2 year diploma in Planning, Engineering, or Architectural Technology from a recognized institute of technology 
  • A Cartographic Technology Diploma from a recognized technology institute including coursework in geographic analysis and Geographic Information Systems would be an asset 
  • 5 years of progressively responsible GIS experience including experience in land use planning, and producing GIS based maps and related materials 
  • Knowledge of land use planning in one or more of the following areas: planning, architecture, graphics and cartography 
  • Proven ability to perform the expected duties using specific technical software or the ability to adapt because of related experience using similar software 
  • Working knowledge of planning legislation and regulatory requirements and of City policy, practices, procedures and initiatives related to assigned duties 
  • Ability to interpret and apply the regulations contained in the Zoning Bylaw 
  • Ability to meet and deal effectively with the development industry and members of the public, including the ability to negotiate an alternative course of action and enforce regulations with consistency, impartiality and good judgment 
  • Ability to work on a wide range of items in a fast paced, large volume and deadline driven environment 
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to reach consensus, gain acceptance and apply a wide perspective on challenging issues for decision 
  • Ability to define a problem and identify viable solutions 
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a valid City Driver’s Permit is a requirement of the role

Hours of Work : 33.75 hours per week 
 
Salary: $42.248 – $53.269 (Hourly); $74,430.410 – $93,846.660 (Annually)
