The Department of Geography & Planning in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto (St. George campus) invites applications for a 3-year contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) with an expected start date of August 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in physical or human geography (or a closely aligned discipline) with a research/teaching focus in GIS/GIScience by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter and possess a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We welcome applications from candidates with an interest in the applications of GIS in fields such as public health, transportation, planning, or physical/environmental geography, among others.
We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures in GIS/GIScience. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry will be provided by strong letters of reference; teaching awards and accolades; presentations at significant, discipline-relevant conferences; and in a teaching dossier which includes teaching accomplishments; a statement of teaching philosophy; sample course syllabi related to the teaching of Geographical Information Systems; and teaching evaluations.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a wide range of courses that may include introductory, intermediate, and advanced GIS courses, a fourth-year capstone GIS course, a graduate-level GIS course for non-specialists, and other undergraduate GIS courses based on the candidates teaching interests and in consultation with the Associate Chair, Undergraduate. ESRI Canada’s ArcGIS software will be the core software used in all of these courses, but it is possible to supplement this with other software where appropriate. The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake normal departmental service duties including various committee memberships, potential roles on undergraduate and graduate thesis committees, identifying possible internship opportunities in the area of GIS, and contributing to the development of new GIS/GIScience curricula.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
