The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates to join our organization as a regular full-time GIS Technician I in the Information Technology Division of the Corporate Services Department. Reporting to the Manager, Information Technology Division and supervised by the GIS Supervisor, the GIS Technician I performs technical work maintaining the Cowichan Valley Regional District’s (CVRD’s) Geographic Information System (GIS) data. The GIS Technician I: edits GIS data; prepares material for public presentation; maintains the CVRD’s house numbering system; maintains corporate records relating to GIS in accordance with the Records Classification and Retention Schedule and responds to inquiries related to GIS.

Reporting to the Manager, Information Technology Division and supervised by the GIS Supervisor, the GIS Technician I performs technical work maintaining the Cowichan Valley Regional District’s (CVRD’s) Geographic Information System (GIS) data. The GIS Technician I: edits GIS data; prepares material for public presentation; maintains the CVRD’s house numbering system; maintains corporate records relating to GIS in accordance with the Records Classification and Retention Schedule and responds to inquiries related to GIS.

Qualifications

  • Secondary school graduation plus graduation from a recognized institute with courses in GIS and Cartography, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers’ License (submit a recent driver’s abstract with your application)
  • A minimum of two (2) years of practical experience utilizing a GIS application.
  • Experience with Esri, ArcGIS Desktop, and AutoDesk AutoCad in a local government environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of programming techniques, languages, and customization tools.
  • Knowledge of local government services would be an asset.

Typical Job Duties:

  • Records Land Title subdivision plans.
  • Maintains the CVRD’s house numbering system.
  • Maintains CVRD GIS data as required.
  • Prepares maps for presentations and special projects.
  • Orders supplies, equipment, and data relating to GIS.
  • Responds to public inquiries related to GIS.
  • Performs general filing and maintains an inventory of maps and plans, and liaises with outside agencies including the Land Title Office and the BC Assessment Authority.
  • Performs any other related duties or tasks as assigned.

Hours of Work

The hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, and this position is also eligible for flextime.

Salary

This unionized position (CUPE Local 358) has a salary range in three steps $36.74 – $37.82 – $38.97 per hour (2021 rates). A comprehensive benefits package is offered with this position.

Organizational Relationship:

Reports to the Manager, Information Technology Division and is supervised by the GIS Supervisor.
