GIS Technician – Full time (Burnaby, British Columbia)Fire Underwriters Survey™ (FUS) is a national organization administered by OPTA Information Intelligence, formerly CGI Insurance Business Services, formerly the Insurers’ Advisory Organization and the Canadian Underwriters Association. FUS provides data on public fire protection for fire insurance statistical work and underwriting purposes of subscribing insurance companies. Subscribers of the Fire Underwriters Survey represent approximately 85 per cent of the private sector property and casualty insurers in Canada.

We are currently seeking a GIS Technician for the Burnaby area.

Role Responsibilities:

Operational Grading Index Support

  • Responsible for the ongoing spatial data maintenance and dissemination, end-user support and the generation of maps and other GIS analytics, reports and information products
  • Responsible for the acquisition of data and creation of hydrant, boundary and emergency service related maps
  • Responsible for compiling and organizing GIS data from maps, databases and other sources
  • Responsible for the collection of data using digital, telephone and mail out systems and resources
  • Responsible for the collection and conversion of mapping resources and data
  • Responsible for reporting on data acquisitions and progress toward having all infrastructure in all communities across Canada geocoded and in the Grading Index
  • Conduct programmatic and manual analysis and create reports and thematic maps on the data within the GIS
  • Ensure that quality assurance on new or revised data conforms to standards laid out in the GeoDatabase, or any other applicable standard or policy
  • Responsible for the conversion, import and export data in and out of the GIS system
  • Direct the preparation of regular status reports (weekly, quarterly and annually), highlighting GIS issues requiring attention and focusing on helping the organization move toward its goals

Research and Development

  • Assist FUS Survey team and OPTA in conducting analytics using GIS tools
  • Investigate and research new techniques and technologies relating to GIS
  • Suggest improvements in GIS systems and help organization to become “state of the art” and maximally efficient in terms of the use of GIS technologies
  • Maintain strong relationship with FUS Survey team and OPTA; work in concert for success

Consulting and Special Projects Support

  • Work with internal and external consultants to support consulting projects and Grading Index initiatives
  • Assist surveyors and FUS Survey team and OPTA throughout projects to understand how GIS can be used to make projects more efficient, more accurate, more effective and more aesthetically pleasing and sale-able

Qualifications and Education:

  • Minimum two-year College Diploma in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Sciences, Engineering Technology, or equivalent
  • Engineering Technologist (AScT or C.E.T.) designation is preferred
  • 2-3 years experience and knowledge with GIS databases and editing using ESRI ArcGIS software; and developing and maintaining GIS data and other GIS output products including the use of ESRI software and Global Positioning System (G.P.S) units for data collection
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD as related to municipal infrastructure mapping

  • Knowledge of modern component-based GIS tools and methodology for municipal and utility GIS use cases
  • Knowledge of SQL Databases and ArcGIS Enterprise Server is an asset
  • Strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
