GIS Technician Summer Student Position

The goal of the GIS Technician Summer Student position is to offer the successful candidate an opportunity to improve their skills and gain experience working in a municipal environment. Under the supervision of the Manager of Information Technology, the student will work as a member of the IT team and carry out a variety of duties.

Hours – 35 hour work week, Monday to Friday 8:30am–4:30pm

Wage – $16.00 per hour

Work term is from May 3, 2021 to August 27, 2021.


Working in an ESRI ArcGIS environment, the GIS Technician’s duties will primarily consist of the provision of technical support and development for the following initiatives.

  • Support the Civic Addressing Coordinator in administration of the Municipal civic addressing process including documentation of updates to the Nova Scotia Civic Addressing File;
  • GIS support for administration of Municipal By-Laws;
  • GIS support for rezoning applications including land use surveys, site plans, reports and public notices.

In past summers, the GIS Technician has had the opportunity to work on a number of projects not listed in their official duties. These projects have included work on Municipal Heritage Properties, Community Wellhead Protection, Pollution Abatement and Lake Monitoringprograms as well as special mapping projects for Community groups i.e. watershed and water sampling sites for The Friends of the Cornwallis River Society and trails mapping for local trail societies.

Education Level – Successful completion of first year of a GIS related program.

Required Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge and competency using the ArcGIS suite of ESRI software;
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Competencies

  • Experience with GPS technologies;
  • Experience with graphics software.
