Provide the technical support in the delivery of the community planning and development approval service to the residents of Saint John. Ensure quality data, spatial analysis and mapping to support evidence-based decision-making. Serve the wider Corporation by creating, updating and maintaining geographic data as required. Provide support to GIS users and respond to internal and external requests for geographic information. Coordinate spatial data collection and analysis projects for all City departments.
•Through knowledge of GIS; preparing mapping, collect and analyze data, create documents in order to provide technical support.
•Excellent customer service orientation, communicating with GIS users and responding to internal and external requests.
•Strong attention to detail in order to effectively create, update, and maintain geographical information.
•The ability to maintain the integrity of the Geographic Information System by training users, troubleshooting issues, writing batch programs, documenting processes and procedures, creating training manuals.
It is likely the successful candidate will have gained the above competencies through post-secondary education in a related field and progressive experience in a similar work environment. Certification as a GIS Professional is an asset.

Key Results Areas:
Assists departments by providing GIS and analytical support required to deliver or improve City services including:
•Preparing mapping to support current planning and policy planning functions;
•Collecting and analyzing data to support the implementation of the City’s by-laws and improve service delivery;
•Creating maps, graphics and reports to support the legislative requirements of the Community Planning Act; and
•Providing customer service and assists clients with data needs.
Provides accurate and current geographical information to clients by:
•Creating, updating and maintaining various spatial data sets;
•Creating, updating and maintaining related attribute records;
•Ensuring proper data modeling and database design;
•Maintaining, updating and reconciling the MIS land management module;
•Preparing GIS data for clients; and
•Responding to spatial analysis and mapping requests from clients.
Acts to ensure the ongoing accessibility of the Geographic Information System by:
•Providing GIS user support and training;
•Documenting processes and procedures;
•Troubleshooting software/hardware issues;
•Writing and editing batch programs and scripts;
•Producing help and training manuals; and
•Monitoring and ordering printer and plotter supplies.
Education, Training & Experience:
Those applicants with excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French will be given preference.
Class 5 Driver’s License
•In-depth knowledge of Enterprise GIS and relational database management systems;
•Advanced knowledge of the City’s municipal information system;
•Excellent understanding of and ability to perform spatial and statistical analysis;
•Demonstrated sound knowledge of cartographic principles;
•Excellent attention to detail;
•Advanced understanding of coordinate systems, projections and scale;
•Advanced knowledge of remote sensing and global positioning systems;
•Ability to quickly learn to use new software;
•Advanced knowledge of various Esri software;
•Working knowledge of CAD software;
•Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Access;
•Advanced knowledge of audio/visual equipment, plotter, scanner and general office equipment;
•Working knowledge of graphic design software; and
•Programming skills would be considered an asset.
