As a Recreation Planning Specialist, you will be responsible for managing and leading staff and consultants to coordinate funds and time required for the planning of City of Calgary recreation capital projects. You will identify and set project priorities and ensure that internal and external stakeholders are engaged and moving toward common goals and outcomes. Primary duties include:
  • Oversee land use planning functions required to secure land to build new facilities.
  • Ensure servicing and land use approvals are in place, all levies and fees are accounted for and key stakeholders have been engaged to establish construction ready land parcels.
  • Follow the corporate stage gating process and how we ensure that the goals and principles of integrated planning are adhered to.
  • Work with the project team to incorporate learnings and feedback from internal and external stakeholder consultations to refine the facilities amenities and features considering projects objectives, original intent, and budget limitations.
  • Review key community planning documents such as local area plans and development applications to ensure they align with Recreation’s vision, objectives and requirements for each project.
  • Organize, assess, recommend and develop procedures applicable to each project.
  • Planning scope, deadlines and budget for each project and sets deadlines to meet and ensure projects are delivered accordingly on time and within budget.
  • A degree in Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Planning or a related field and registration or eligibility for registration with the applicable professional association.
  • At least 5 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of local, provincial, and national policies for recreation.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality deliverables (reports, policies, presentations, evaluation frameworks, data visualization, and briefing notes) for non-technical audiences.
  • High level of attention to detail and the ability to work collaboratively and under tight timelines.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) will be considered assets.
  • Experience in Geospatial analysis will be considered asset.
  • Success in this role requires strong communication, data gathering and analysis, problem solving, project management and state of the art multi-media presentation and platform skills.
