New Survey Training Program Offers Opportunities for Grads, Industry

GoGeomatics Canada is spear-heading a brand new Training Program that will provide opportunities for both geomatics graduates and the survey industry in Canada. The Survey Training Program is designed to train qualified candidates to work in the highly lucrative and rewarding field of surveying. This program is free for participants, and will guarantee students a job upon successful completion.

The GoGeomatics training program is designed by industry, for industry, to meet the high demand for trained survey and drafting staff in Canada. Candidates will receive industry-quality training at no cost, in exchange for a commitment of a fixed work term (minimum of 1 year) with their sponsoring company.

Many GIS graduates in Canada are having a difficult time finding meaningful work in their fields of study. What they do have, however, is a basis of understanding in spatial thinking and the software and hardware associated with it. GoGeomatics has already identified the desire among young graduates to retrain for a career in surveying (see the article here). This new program will offer those graduates the opportunity to switch to an in-demand career path.

Program Overview

The GoGeomatics Training Program is focused on building practical skills that industry has identified as being valuable to the workplace. The program is relatively short, 4-6 weeks long, with a combination of lecture and lab work.

The program will consist of two streams of training, out of which students will choose one:

  • Survey Office Technician
  • Survey Field Technician

The program will take place in Summer 2015, and students will live in campus residence for the duration of the program. Both training and room-and-board will be free to students. These costs will be subsidized by industry, who will sponsor a student’s training in exchange for a commitment of a fixed work term. These contracts positions will be located in Canada’s western provinces, with the majority being in Alberta.

The only cost to students will be travel to the training program.

Who is eligible?

The Survey Training Program is highly competitive; this year, we will be accepting approximately 20 participants. GoGeomatics Canada is currently seeking Canadian GIS graduates who are interested in switching careers, and willing to travel for training and work. Candidates should be highly motivated, fast learners, and with a basic understanding of spatial thinking. See the full posting for more information, including instructions on how to apply.

We are currently putting together a long-list of potential candidates. Shortlisted candidates will be selected and interviewed by industry.

If your company is interested in participating in this Training Program, contact Jonathan Murphy for more information.

This is an awesome opportunity for anyone who is interested in those kind of jobs is ready for a change.

  2. I think it’s awesome for people to be able to get an opportunity to learn a new skill, especially when they can do it in their current work place. It will definitely be interesting to see the way this kind of thing works over the next few years for sure.
