Special Issue: “Advanced Remote Sensing Technologies for Natural Resource Management and Disaster Monitoring” 39th Canadian Symposium on Remote Sensing, Saskatoon.

The 39th Canadian Symposium on Remote Sensing (CSRS2018) held on 19-21 June in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada themed on an era of applications of advanced remote sensing technologies with big data analysis techniques in natural resource management and disaster monitoring. The CSRS2018 has been featured by advanced remote sensing technologies, including Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM), the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) Mission, Sentinel-1, Radarsat-2, Sentinel-2&3, Landsat 8 and its legacy, LiDAR, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) etc.

At the conference, almost 190 Canadian and international researchers had presented and discussed their research in environmental monitoring and modelling, arctic and northern surveillance, and resource exploration etc. To further facilitate the communications between researchers, all the presenters are sincerely invited to submit scientific papers for publication in the special issue of the Canadian Journal of Remote Sensing (CJRS-JCT).

The special issue is open to all papers (oral and poster) presented at the CSRS2018 conference, as well as papers specifically focused on the “advanced Remote Sensing technologies and deep learning techniques for natural resource management and natural disaster monitoring and forecasting”.

Call for Papers – Special Issue on “Arctic and Northern Monitoring and Applications”

The international circumpolar Arctic and Northern regions are in need of assessment and monitoring for a broad variety of applications. It is an area of increased sensitivity and vulnerability to factors such as changes in climate, land, oceans, and the atmosphere. The use of Earth Observation (EO) imagery and data from various platforms and sensors is the only efficient and feasible way to get comprehensive information over such vast, remote, harsh and important environments, and to monitor change, understand processes and dynamics, and make predictions. This is essential across a wide array of national and international requirements, such as the environment, resource management, transportation and navigation, climate change, land cover / land use, forested and tundra ecosystems, carbon cycling and reporting, sea ice properties and dynamics, permafrost, glaciers, wildlife and species protection, atmosphere, monitoring greenhouse gases, water [including lakes, rivers, wetlands], snow, oceans, surveillance and security, land management, hazards such as wildfires, and more. To achieve these goals, innovation in analytics and processing of single-date, multi-temporal or time series of imagery from satellite, airborne, UAV and other platforms will also be needed, as well as from other data sources. This can include developments and use of algorithms, sensors [both active and passive], platforms [satellite, airborne, UAV, towers etc.], and also new approaches to proper field validation over a range of spatial scales, data types, and applications.

Arctic Monitoring and Applications is the theme of four special sessions on Earth Observation at the EUMETSAT Satellite Conference in Tallinn, Estonia 17 – 21 September 2018. This Special Issue is open to all presenting authors (oral and poster) from that conference, as well as any papers from others that are focused on the above Arctic and Northern topics. Any scientist(s) in these areas are invited to submit a manuscript for review and consideration. These should address pertinent issues in any country or jurisdiction(s) involving circumpolar Arctic and Northern regions.

A goal of the Special Issue is also to help move Arctic and Northern EO science to the next level through increased collaboration and partnerships, especially across diverse applications where synergies in investment and data sharing can be essential for optimising the delivery of key EO products. Accordingly, Arctic and Northern data policy and infrastructure as it relates to EO science and analytics is also of interest.

All manuscripts will be subjected to peer-review and standard publication fees. Research Papers, Review Papers, as well as Research Notes are all welcome and invited.
