The Geospatial Professional Network (GPN), formerly known as URISA, has officially launched a call for participation for its 2025 GIS Management Survey. This initiative serves as a critical update to the 2019 study, aiming to capture the evolving landscape of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) leadership and operations.
Purpose and Impact
The primary goal of this survey is to collect comprehensive data on current GIS program and project management approaches. By gathering diverse perspectives from across the industry, GPN intends to identify emerging trends and provide actionable insights into modern management practices.
The findings will offer significant value to several key groups within the geospatial community:
- GIS Managers: To benchmark their programs against industry standards.
- Researchers and Educators: To ground their work in current practical realities.
- Private Companies: To better align GIS products and services with organizational needs.
Survey Scope and Topics

- Organizational Context: Respondent details, organization types, and the specific mission and scope of their GIS programs.
- Infrastructure: Technical architecture and available resources.
- Governance: Organizational structures, staffing levels, and administrative frameworks.
- Legal & Formal Mandates: The instruments that authorize GIS work, ranging from legislative statutes and executive orders to service level agreements (SLAs) and data-sharing licenses.
