This community-focused session brings together professionals from industry, consulting, and education to talk about how maps support storytelling, decision-making, and public understanding. Students, educators, GIS practitioners, and anyone interested in maps are all welcome.
Featured Speakers
Dr. Aileen Buckley
Research Cartographer and Senior Principal GIS Engineer on the Living Atlas of the World team at Esri. She holds a PhD in Geography from Oregon State University and presents internationally on mapping and GIS. She is the lead author of Map Use, 9th edition (Spring 2026), a former president of the Cartography and Geographic Information Society, and currently serves with the International Cartographic Association as U.S. lead delegate and Chair of the Ethics in Cartography Commission.
Julie — Cartographer & Mapping Consultant
Since 2013, Julie has worked with clients around the world creating maps that help people explore places and understand stories. Her projects include author maps, tourism visitor guides, and cycling maps that support safe active transportation.
Marikka, GISP — GIS Professor, BCIT
With 25 years of GIS experience, Marikka specializes in field survey, spatial analytics, workflow automation, and cartography. She has worked in municipal operations, engineering consulting, and post-secondary education, and now teaches full-time at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. She also volunteers with the Canadian Cartographic Association as Mapping Technologies and Spatial Data Strategies Chair and Co-Editor of Cartouche.
