OpenStreetMap: Traces of the Past exploring the Maps and History of Vimy Ridge

March 13, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

GoGeomatics is proud to present one of our own to give a talk at the March GoGeomatics social. Bert de Brujin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/bertdebruijn/) is one of Canada’s most innovative and dedicated entrepreneurs. His passion for military history, education, and open source software have driven him to create WikiWar.

WikiWar (http://wikiwar.net/) is a project to structure and geovisualize the entirety of human military history using OpenStreetMap. Today, OpenStreetMap contributors follow some simple mapping rules when adding to the modern map, including what is called the “ground rule”: map the world as it can be observed by someone physically there. But what if you aren’t interested in the world as it exists today? What if you want to see the world digitally as it was observed a long time ago?

Follow along as members of the Muninn and WikiWar projects use the OpenStreetMap toolset to create a historically-accurate digital map of the Vimy Ridge area in time for the 101st anniversary of the famous WWI battle of the same name.
