WDCAG 2019

March 8 @ 8:00 am - March 9 @ 5:00 pm

We acknowledge and respect the Lekwungen-speaking peoples on whose traditional territory the University of Victoria stands, and the Songhees, Esquimalt, and  WSÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

The Department of Geography at the University of Victoria is pleased to host the Western Division of the Canadian Association of Geographers (WDCAG) conference on March 8-9, 2019. With its inviting climate, environment, and cultural landscape, Victoria is the perfect place for a winter visit. The conference will involve a day of field excursions followed by an evening plenary (on March 8) and a day of presentations followed by a banquet celebration (on March 9).

Conference registration is now open and Early Bird rates apply until Feb 1, 2019. http://wdcag2019.uvic.ca/

Faculty, staff, students, and others undertaking geographic studies are invited to present their research in the conventional formats (i.e. oral presentations or posters) as well as other formats such as panel discussions, teaching circles, participatory workshops, visual or performance art. All interested presenters are asked to submit an abstract of up to 250 words that provides a concise statement of the topic or issue to be discussed and a summary of the major findings and conclusions by the deadline of Friday, January 21, 2019. Abstracts can be submitted via email (wdcag@uvic.ca).Upon submitting your abstract, please identify the following theme with which your presentation best fits: 1) Physical Geography; (2) Human Geography; (3) Human-Environment Relations; (4) GIScience/Geomatics; (5) Geographic Education or (6) Community-Engaged Learning.

A Note on Presentation Formats

Paper presentations will be organized into 20-minute time-slots scheduled for March 9 with an expectation of a 10-15 minute presentation followed by 5-10 minutes for questions. All rooms will have digital projectors and a PC available for presenters. Please arrive early to your session with your presentation file on a USB flash drive to be uploaded.

Posters will be available for viewing in a special area all day on March 9. Authors should be prepared to present a brief summary of their poster content and be available for questions during a scheduled poster presentation session. This format is best suited for material that can easily be communicatedvisually. Materials should be of professional quality and be clearly legible from a distance of 1-1.5 metres. Interactive posters are encouraged.

Workshops will be 75 minutes in length including time for discussion and questions. Preference will be given to proposals that are participatory, interactive, innovative, and collaborative.

Other ideas? Interested in organizing a panel discussion? Visual or performance art? Something a little outside the box? As part of our review process, we’d love to hear about other ideas to explore the possibilities! Please email us at wdcag@uvic.ca.
