GoGeomatics networking socials have grown into the beating heart of Canada’s geospatial community. Every month (except summer), professionals, students, and enthusiasts gather to share knowledge, spark collaborations, and build lasting relationships. What began as a small idea has evolved into Canada’s largest professional geospatial networking network with chapters in cities from coast to coast.
Founder and CEO, Jonathan Murphy remembers the early days: “I started GoGeomatics networking events a couple of years before discovering Meetup. The early events were small, informal socials at local pubs designed to connect anyone working with or an interest in all things GEO together. It wasn’t until 2013 that I began using Meetup as a platform to help organize and expand. The Ottawa events quickly inspired groups in Toronto, Niagara, and beyond.”
The Value of Monthly Meetups
Consistency is what makes these gatherings so valuable. “The value of running the group is incredibly important, as networking is what helps people land many jobs in the field,” explains Dianne, Kelowna Chapter Leader. “I would encourage new potential leaders to start their own groups. It’s a very fun and rewarding experience running GoGeomatics socials.”
Farzaneh, who leads the Ottawa chapter, agrees: “What GoGeomatics events gave me, I could have spent years trying to achieve in my career. It was a shortcut. By getting involved, I built a huge network of connections across Canada in both the private sector and government. If you’re looking for the same kind of boost, start a chapter in your city.”
Favorite Memories and Moments
The stories are full of energy and community spirit. Jonathan reflects: “One of my favorite memories is watching students connect organically with industry professionals, spark collaborations, and even discover new career paths right at the table. The in-person dynamic is incredibly powerful. it builds trust, camaraderie, and serendipitous connections in a way that’s hard to replicate online.”
For David, Vancouver Chapter Leader , it’s the informal conversations that make the events special: “It’s great seeing a bunch of people, both regulars and newcomers, get together and talk about GIS and geomatics. I’ve tried those online get-together things during COVID, but nothing beats talking face-to-face over a beer or three.”
Why In-Person Matters
The COVID years made clear how irreplaceable the in-person format is. “Keeping events free and casual, without barriers like memberships or tickets, created a recurring, welcoming space where people could network, learn, and support one another, whether they were early-career newcomers or seasoned experts,” says Jonathan. “The in-person dynamic builds trust in a way that’s hard to replicate online.”
Advice for Future Leaders
Many of today’s chapter leaders started as attendees, then stepped up when the chance came. “When two of the leaders stepped down, I figured leading it myself was a good idea,” recalls David. “If you think there’s a decent group of enthusiasts in your area, don’t hesitate! Contact GoGeomatics and get a local chapter going. it’s easier than you think.”
Jonathan’s advice echoes that: “Just get people in the same room and let the conversation take off. Over time, these meetups have become a genuine force in strengthening Canada’s geomatics ecosystem—fostering mentorship, sparking innovation, creating career opportunities, and building community from coast to coast.”
A Platform for Sponsors and Partners
GoGeomatics events are not only a place for professionals to connect, they are also an excellent platform for businesses and organizations to showcase their work. Each month, attendees from government, private sector, and academia come together in an informal, collaborative setting. Many new initiatives, partnerships, and even job opportunities begin right at these tables.
By sponsoring an event, businesses can contribute to the community while gaining visibility among a highly engaged and diverse audience. Sponsors are welcome to provide complimentary food or drinks, share a short presentation about their company, and highlight the services or products they offer. It’s an ideal opportunity to demonstrate thought leadership, build relationships, and connect with decision-makers and future talent across Canada’s geospatial ecosystem.
For organizations looking to make a lasting impact in the GEO community, sponsoring a GoGeomatics event is a direct way to give back and get noticed.
A Force for the Future
GoGeomatics events have grown far beyond casual socials. They’re a proven way to accelerate careers, strengthen professional networks, and build a sense of community in the Canadian geospatial sector.
Whether you’re a student taking your first steps, a seasoned expert looking to give back, or simply curious about geomatics, these monthly events offer something no online platform can match: real connections, real opportunities, and real community.
Your city could be next. If you’ve got the passion and a few hours a month, consider starting a chapter — as Dianne, Farzaneh, David, Hillary, and Jonathan all show, the rewards are greater than you can imagine.
