The German feed-in-tariff program has been the motivating force that has led to an installed capacity of 26.5 GW of solar PV power in Germany and has been widely emulated in other countries. The country’s target is 52 GW by 2020. A year ago it was announced that revisions to the tariff structure were in the offing. There have been disagreements between the Bundestag and Bundesrat on the details of the new tariff structure, but the mediation committee has recently announced an agreement.
It appears that tariffs will be reduced by 25% for installations with 40 kW – 1 MW peak capacity. New plants with a capacity of more than 10 MW will no longer be eligible for feed-in tariffs. There is a new feed-in-tariff category for installations with 10-40 kW peak capacity with increased subsidies. According to GTM Research this category accounted for over 25 percent of the total installed capacity in 2011. The feed-in-tariff program has been capped at 52GW.
