CERN announced that at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) it had collected 1 fb-1 (inverse femtobarn) or about 70,000 billion proton-proton collisions, six months ahead of schedule. According to Quantum Diaries this means is that by the end of 2011, barring unforeseen shutdowns of the LHC, we will definitely know whether or not the higgs boson, as predicted by the Standard Model, exists.
