A new report released by IDC called Worldwide Open Source Software 2009–2013 Forecast predicts that the open source market will accelerate in 2009 and beyond. The study forecasts a 22.4% compound annual growth rate. What motivated this higher forecast is that open source adoption over the past 12 months was higher than expected and it is believed that the economic downturn is responsible for the increased rate of adoption of open source.
The study also found that large software vendors like IBM, Sun, Dell, HP, and Oracle are making significant amounts of indirect revenue from their open source activities.
Also more software companies are adopting hybrid business models, in other words, offering both proprietary and open source software. Examples include Oracle, Autodesk, and others.
