Energy-related CO2 emissions up 3.7 % in 2010 in U.S.

According to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest Annual Energy Review, emissions of CO2 from energy consumption in the U.S. increased by 3.7 percent in 2010 over 2009, reversing a downward trend in the last few years.

  • 1990 5039 million tonnes CO2
  • 2009 5425
  • 2010 5633

The total CO2 emissions for 2010 are 11.7 percent higher than the emissions for 1990, the usual reference point for much of the world, including California.

Of the 2010 total emissions, 40.3 percent is generated by the electric power sector.

  • 1990 1831 million tonnes CO2
  • 2009 2159
  • 2010 2271

Electric power derived emissions were up 5.2 percent in 2010 over 2009 and 24 percent higher than 1990 emissions.
