FERC conference to discuss reliability risks of EPA MATS standard for power plants

The EPA’s Mercury and Air Toxics Standard (MATS) for power plants which is to be issued by Dec 16 2011 has got the attention of the electric power industry because of the impact of potentially shutting down between 10 and 60 GW of aging coal fired generation capacity.  For example, the Midwest regional transmision operator (MISO) has expressed concern to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) that the timing of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air emission rules, specifically the 2014/2015 compliance deadline for the EPA’s proposed mercury rule (MATS), is a threat to power reliability.

FERC is holding a technical conference focussed on reliability of the electric power grid in the U.S. Among the issues that are being discussed are reliability concerns associated with compliance with Environmental Protection Agency regulations such as MATS.  A free live webcast is available for this meeting and webcasts are archived for 3 months.
