At 8 am Mar 16 JST (07:00:00 p.m. Tuesday March 15 ET) JAIF has issued a status update on the Fukushima Daiichi reactors.
Pressure in Units 1 and 3 is reported stable. Pressure in Unit 2 is fluctuating. Most disquieting is the coolant levels in the reactor cores.
- Unit 1 – fuel rods half exposed
- Unit 2 – “recovering” after being fully exposed
- Unit 3 – fuel rods half exposed
Fuel integrity is reported as “damaged” for Units 1,2, and 3.
Containment integrity is reported as not damaged for Units 1 and 3. Containment integrity for Unit 2 is reported as “damage suspected.”
It reports that a second fire was observed at Unit 4 at 5:45am, which “then disappeared later.” Water levels in Unit 5 and 6 spent fuel pools are reported to be decreasing.
At 23:35 Mar 15 JST (10:35:00 am Tuesday March 15 ET), the observed radiation at the NPS perimeter was 6308μSv/h, much higher than the last reading (489.8 microSieverts/hr) I reported. This means that in half an hour, you will get the dosage that you typically get in a year from ambient background radiation.
