Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Reactors Status from JAIF: Unit 3 and 4 Spent Fuel Pools Remain Priority

At 16:00 March 17 (03:00 am Thursday March 17 ET) JAIF issues the latest status report for Fukushima Daiichi reactors and spent fuel pools.

Units 3 and 4 Spent Fuel Pools

Immediate threat is damage of the fuels in the fuel pool outside the containment vessel at Unit-3 and Unit-4. To improve the situation of lack of water in the spent fuelpools at Unit-3 and Unit-4, the self defense force started operation for filling the pool with water in 09:48 of March 17. This operation is to drop a huge bucket of seawater from a helicopter. In addition, watering from the ground by high pressure pump is to be prepared.

Unit 2 Reactor

Water level in reactor pressure vessel reported to be Higher than half of the Fuel, but pressure is Unknown (run out of battery)

Radiation measured at plant perimeter

646.2μSv/h at 11:10, Mar. 17 (10:10 p.m. Wednesday March 16 ET)

This is less than the last reported reading 1472μSv/h at 16:20, Mar. 16 (03:20 am Wednesday March 16 ET)
