Fukushima Daiichi: Radiation levels inside Units 1,2,3 too high for measuring devices

Tuesday, April 05, 2011 19:51  NHK reports on what appears to be an interview with an anonymous radiation monitor, whose affiliation is not reported, at the nuclear power plant.  The monitor is reported to have said that “no one can enter the plant’s No. 1 through 3 reactor buildings because radiation levels are so high that monitoring devices have been rendered useless.”

He said levels outside the buildings exceed 100 mSv/hr in some places.  Pools and streams of water contaminated by high-level radiation are being found throughout the facility.  He said he’s very worried about the safety of workers there.

The highest radiation dosage levels I have seen were recorded from the air above the plant on March 17.

  • 4,130 μSv/h (4.13 mSv/hr) at 9:20AM on March 17 – 300 meters above the plant
  • 87,700 μSv/h (87.7 mSv/hr) at 9:20AM on March 17 – 90 meters above the plant
