According to the New York Times, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said Wednesday that some of the core of the Unit 2 reactor “had probably leaked from its steel pressure vessel into the bottom of the containment structure”.
The NRC statement said that this was a speculative interpolation based on high radiation readings that TEPCO had found in Unit 2’s torus or drywell, the bottom of the primary containment structure. The NRC also said that it “does not believe that the reactor vessel has given way, and we do believe practically all of the core remains in the vessel.”
