At the India Geospatial Forum today, Sanjay Kumar, the CEO of Geospatial Media and Commmunications, the organizers of the conference announced that this year’s India Geospatial Forum is Geospatial Media’s 100th conference. To mark the occasion, Sanjay presented a fascinating bit of background history about Geospatial Media.
Geospatial Media organized its first conference, then called Map India, in 1997. It is estimated that since then, 52,000 people have attended Geospatial Media’s 100 conferences in Europe (2,000+), Latin America (2,500+), Africa (5,000+), Middle East (7,500+) and South Asia (20,000+). Geospatial Media had also expanded beyond its original focus on organizing geospatial conferences into publications, web portals, newsletters, and most recently vertical industry reports.
Geospatial Media’s original vision was to increase awareness about GIS and geospatial in India. Since then Geospatial Media has expanded far beyond this into business development, policy advocacy, knowledge management/vertical industry analysis, and most recently, thought leadership. Geospatial Media’s advocacy efforts came to fruition February 3 of this year when the Prime Minister of India announced an investment of R 3000 crores (about $500 million) in a National GIS for India. With respect to the thought leadership, Geospatial Media is organizing its first GeoSmart Forum in Hong Kong in June.
