GIS Capability Maturity Model released by URISA GIS Management Institute

The GIS Management Institute (GMI) has published the URISA GIS Capability Maturity Model (GISMM).
The URISA GISCMM is designed to assist enterprises to assess the state of their GIS and the maturity level of their business processes, which will help them prioritize future development of their GIS and improvements to their business processes.

In 2009 a first version of a GIS Capability Maturity Model (GISMM) developed by Greg Babinski and modeled on the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) was adopted as a URISA Initiative. The folowing year URISA decided to develop a Geospatial Management Competency Model.  It decided to include the GISCMM as part of that effort. In 2011 there was a day long GIS Managers task force on the GISMM at the 2011 Washington GIS Conference.

In 2012 URISA’s new GIS Management Institute (GMI) took responsibility for the GISMM. The GMI reviewed and revised the GISCMM based on the 2011 GIS Managers task force and on its own recommendations. In April 2013 the revised GISCMM was published for international peer review. The feedback was incorporated into the GISMM. The GMI committee unanimously endorsed the GISMM in September.
