Since 2009 as part of the Carbon Discosure Project (CDP), Autodesk has been reporting its carbon footprint. (It has also reported how it has reduced the carbon footprint of its annual Autodesk University conference.) Google also participates in CDP.
No one outside of Google knows how many servers Google has, but the last number I heard several years ago was half a million, and there have been reports that this has grown to a million. Google has just disclosed that it used 2.26 billion kWh and emitted 1.46 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2010. It says 25 percent of its electricity came from renewable sources in 2010. Google purchases carbon offsets for its emissions and claims it has been “carbon neutral” since 2007.
