India Focusses on Smart Grid

To sustain a 7+% rate of economic expansion India will need to improve the reliability of its grid, accelerate rural electrification, and add new sources of energy.  The Indian Government has created the “India Smart Grid Task Force”, which is tasked with creating a road map for development and deployment of intelligent grid technologies, not only with the objective of revamping India’s power grid but also to make India a world leader in smart grid technologies.  It is reported that the task force will include representatives from the Ministries of Home, Defence, Communications & Information Technology, Non-Renewable Energy, Environment and Forests and Finance and from the Planning Commission, the Department of Science and Technology, and other agencies. This initiative has major implications for the geospatial sector in India.

In May the Indian Minister of Power the India announced the Smart Grid Forum, the first initiative of its kind in the Indian power sector.

At the end of 2008 India had a total Installed generation capacity of 160 GW,  53% of which was coal fired, 10% gas, 23% hydro, 3% nuclear, and 8% renewable, predominately wind.
