More New Electricity Generation Capacity from Renewable than from Conventional and Nuclear

According to reports jointly issued by the United Nations Environment Program and the Renewable Energy Policy Network and reported in the Globe and Mail, clean energy is becoming the predominant form of
new power generation. In 2008 and 2009 more new electricity capacity was added in both the United States and Europe from renewable energy sources such as wind
UNEP SEFI logo turbines, photovoltaic cells and other renewable energy sources than from new conventional fossil fuel and nuclear energy power generation.

Worldwide China added the most new renewable power capacity.  The reports predicted that in 2010 or 2011 worldwide new electricity generation capacity from renewable sources will exceed new conventional sources.  In 2009 US$162-billion was invested in clean electricity generation.  Of this $59-billion (45 %) went into wind power generation and $40-billion into photovoltaic cell power generation.  More than 100 countries have passed legislation to encourage renewable power generation.
