Europe, especially the UK and Denmark, has invested heavily in offshore wind power generation. In the US the Cape Wind Project has received regulatory approval from three levels of government after a ten years effort. The US Department of Energy and the Department of the Interior have announced the first interagency plan on offshore wind energy, to encourage the development of offshore wind power generation in the US.
Ohio is planning to go ahead with the development of a 20 MW offshore wind project on Lake Erie.
For the second time in the last five years Ontario has stopped the development of offshore wind farms on the Great Lakes. In 2006 it put a moratorium on offshore development while it examined environmental issues, but it was removed in 2008.
