Open standards have enabled technology without borders

The Internet is a set of open, global standards and perhaps the chief reason for its success is that it is not dominated by any one nation, company or special interest group.  The Internet is the model for The Modern Paradigm for Standards.  For example,

  • IEEE
    standards for physical Internet connectivity
  • IETF standards for
    end-to-end global Internet interoperability
  • W3C standards for the
    World Wide Web

laid the foundation for the Internet and the World Wide
Web and were developed within open models that supported a
voluntary approach to standards adoption.

OpenStand is a movement dedicated to promoting a proven the principles upon which this is based.  It encourages the development of market driven standards
that are global and open—enabling standards without borders and encouraging
innovation for the benefit of humanity.

The OpenStand principles are
based on the effective and efficient standardization processes that
have made the Internet and Web platforms for innovation and
borderless commerce. The
principles stress voluntary adoption and empower the economies of global
market.

The Modern Paradigm for Standards is based on five principles:

1. Cooperation

Cooperation between standards organizations, whereby each
respects the autonomy, integrity, processes, and intellectual property
rules of the others.

2. Adherence to Principles

  • Due process. Decisions are made with equity and fairness among participants.
  • Broad consensus. Processes allow for all views to be considered and addressed, such that agreement can be found across a range of interests.
  • Transparency. Standards organizations provide advance public notice of proposed standards development activities, the scope of work to be undertaken, and conditions for participation.
  • Balance. Standards activities are not exclusively dominated by any particular person, company or interest group.
  • Openness. Standards processes are open to all interested and informed parties.

3. Collective Empowerment

Commitment by affirming standards organizations and their participants to collective empowerment by striving for standards that re based on technical merit, provide global interoperability, scalability, stability, and resiliency, enable global competition; serve as building blocks for further innovation; and  contribute to the creation of global communities, benefiting humanity.

4. Availability

Standards specifications are made accessible to all for implementation and deployment.

5. Voluntary Adoption

Standards are voluntarily adopted and success is determined by the market.
