Radiation Level Down at Fukushima Daiichi Front Gate

At 7:30 am March 15 Eastern Time on NHK government spokesman Edano reported that the radiation measured at the Fukushima Daiichi front gate was 596.4 microsieverts/hour. At this rate it would take 5 hours to get the dosage equivalent to a year’s exposure to ambient background radiation (3 milliSieverts).

This is much less than the over 11,000 microsieverts/hr recorded earlier.

It was also reported that the Unit 1 and Unit 3 reactor containment vessels have not been damaged.  There is concern about the Unit 2 reactor containment vessel.

The other concern is the spent fuels stored in spent fuel pits which apparently caused the fire at Unit 4.  NHK reported concern about Units 5 and 6.

Radiation levels in Tokyo are reported to be low and not a risk to human health.
