Report projects 55% smart meter penetration worldwide by 2020

A new Pike Research report forecasts that the global smart meter market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of just under 5 percent between 2010 and 2020.  Smart meter deployment in North America has already peaked and is expected to drop by 42 percent between 2011 and 2013.  But it is projected that growth in Europe and China will more than make up for the drop in North America.  Growth in China is occurring much earlier and faster than anticipated, and deployments in Europe are expected to take off in the middle part of the decade.

In 2008 of the global installed base of 1.5 billion electricity meters, less than 4% were smart. In four years by 2012 smart meter penetration has grown to over 18 %.  It is expected to continue to grow and is projected to exceed 55% by 2020. That’s nearly 1 billion smart meters worldwide.

Europe

The EC directive on smart meters
mandates that 80% of European homes must have smart meters by 2020.
But in several countries smart meter deployment is happening faster than
that.

Italy was the first European country to adopt  smart grid technology.  Enel
(the largest power company in Italy) has installed 32 million
residential smart electric meters and is offering time-of-use pricing.

Sweden made intelligent meters mandatory in 2009.  In July 2010,
Sweden became the first European nation to reach 100% smart meter
rollout for all energy customers.

In September 2010, the French government decreed that 95% of French homes will have smart meters by 2016.

Finland and Norway are planning to introduce legislation for smart meter implementation by 2013.

In Denmark smart meter deployment is happening rapidly without any government or regulatory intervention.

The U.K. government has released a £ 11.7 billion implementation plan to install 53 million smart meters for gas and electricity use in every home between 2014 and 2020.

China

China plans to invest $490 billion in grid upgrades by 2020, including about $90 billion in smart grid technology.  The
State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) has just announced it will install over
300 million smart meters by the end of 2015.  As of 2011, SGCC has installed 36 million smart meters.
