JAIF Issues Status Report on Fukushima Daiichi Reactors

Status of Fukushima #1 power station as of 11:00, March 15, 2011 (10:00:00 p.m. Monday March 14 ET)

Report from the chief cabinet secretary (Summary)

Fire broke at unit-4 nuclear power plant. Unit-4 was out of service at the
time earthquake occurred. It is presumed that the fuels stored in the spent fuel
pit were heated by itself and hydrogen was generated from these fuels and
explosion occurred. It is also presumed that radioactive nuclides are released
to the environment directly through the broken building. We are trying to put
fire to make things stable.

It is presumed that the suppression pool is partially damaged and small
amount of radionuclide released from the flaw. We can probably guess that
visible fume from unit-2 is steam from the suppression pool.

Water injection continues at unit-1, unit-2 and unit-3. The first priority is to
maintain this status and handle the issue of unit-4.

Radiological observations in the environment are as follows. These values
are observation in the vicinity of the spots radionuclides are released from.
The level becomes smaller with increasing distance.

  • 30 mSv/hr between unit-2 and unit-3
  • 400 mSv/hr between unit-3 and unit-4
  • 100 mSv/hr in the vicinity of unit-4

50 out of 800 TEPCO workers are engaged in water injection operation. The
others have been evacuated.

People who live within 20 km of the power station were asked evacuation.

People who live 20 km outside and 30km within the power station should
stay inside, shut windows and keep airtight.
