Sharing geospatial information on infrastructure mandated by Delhi NCT

The population of the urban agglomeration of the NCT Delhi, estimated to be 22 million, now exceeds that of Mumbai.  To help manage infrastructure in this rapidly growing megacity, in March 2011, the Assembly of the NCT of Delhi unanimously approved the Delhi Geo-spatial Data Infrastructure (Management, Control, Administration, Security and Safety) Act of 2011.  Delhi is the first State in India to enact this type of legislation, which requires that all state departments and civic agencies  use, share and update information on all infrastructure projects on Delhi’s spatial database. The database is a 3D global information system, which includes the demographics of the capital and fiformation about utilities including stormwater and sewer lines, roads, infrastructure and urban planning projects.  Geospatial Delhi Limited, with the chief secretary of Delhi as its chairman, will be in charge of maintaining and updating the database.  Some 30 departments and civic agencies will be expected to share information on the status of their projects and also update the database on a monthly basis.  The objective of the Act is to enable coordinated urban planning, project implementation and overall governance.  The Act is scheduled to come into force next month.
