Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) has announced that it will begin testing smart power meters. Testing could begin in October at residential locations in Tokyo. The power utility ultimately plans to upgrade 27 million meters over the next decade. The motivation for the smart meter deployment is reported to be
- Eliminating the need for manual reading of meters
- Monitoring power usage for time-of-use billing
- Monitoring renewable power generated at customer sites
- Enabling faster recovery from a blackout.
