Statistics Canada’s virtual GIS Day

GIS day is a great opportunity for all GIS communities to come together and network. Statistics Canada hosts its second virtual GIS Day on Wednesday, November 17th from 9 am – 3 pm Eastern Standard Time.

This event will feature virtual booths, panel discussions, and a live stage. Join us for a project showcase and virtual networking across our federal agencies.

The GoGeomatics team present the following sessions at this event:

11:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Fireside chat discussing Geospatial & Geomatics HR: Learning about federal government contracting processes sourcing talent

In this discussion, Jonathan Murphy, Managing Director of GoGeomatics and Terry Aucoin, Managing Partner of ONPAR Solutions, discuss the federal government processes for sourcing talent. This discussion will be useful for both job seekers looking for contracts as well as managers looking to source talent for their departments.

This educational session provides insight from both the procurement perspective and from the side of potential new hires, the “need to knows” (do’s and don’t’ s) of getting hired or hiring geomatics resources in the federal government context. There will also be a short Q & A where participants can ask questions about the procurement process and jobs.

01:00 PM – 01:30 PM: Create interactive visualizations with Statistics Canada data and Tableau Public

This session will present the steps of creating and designing a simple interactive dashboard in Tableau Public, a free version of the Tableau visualization tool that allows you to connect many different types of data, produce visualizations and publish them on the web.

The presentation covers the following topics:

  • Define the purpose of this visualization
  • Get spatial and non-spatial data from the Statistics Canada website
  • Add connections to Tableau Data Source
  • Create charts and maps
  • Design dashboard and storyboard
  • Publish the workbook on the web
