  • Teledyne Optech introduces low-cost, automated airborne surveying at GEOINT 2016

Teledyne Optech is pleased to announce that it will showcase its latest airborne systems including the autonomous Optech Eclipse at the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation’s GEOINT symposium in Orlando, FL on May 15-18.

As the world’s first autonomous airborne collection system for active and passive data, the Eclipse is a great step forward for image descriptionlow-cost and flexible surveying. The system’s highly simplified operation workflow and innovative sensor motion detection system let pilots manage surveys on their own, eliminating the need for an in-aircraft operator and drastically reducing survey costs. To minimize maintenance costs and down time, the Eclipse lidar system uses a rugged polygon scanner, and an integrated camera with a fully electronic shutter. Combined with a relatively low purchase price, these features make the Eclipse an affordable way for many groups to start collecting high-accuracy spatial data and camera imagery remotely for small-area and corridor surveys.

Visitors can also discover the advanced capabilities of the full lineup of Teledyne Optech airborne lidar systems. For wide-area lidar surveys, the Optech Galaxy uses SwathTRAK technology to maintain efficiency and avoid data gaps caused by rugged terrain, and is completely configurable with Teledyne Optech’s array of thermal, multispectral and RGB cameras. The Optech CZMIL Nova meanwhile provides unparalleled performance in bathymetric applications, surveying even in highly turbid waters to map navigation channels and assess the marine environment, and is available for rental through the CZMIL Project Program. Finally, the multispectral Optech Titan uses three lidar channels (one green, two infrared) to bridge the gap between topographic and bathymetric surveying and improve automated target classification efforts.

All these solutions will be displayed at Booth 1036, where Teledyne Optech’s sister companies Teledyne DALSA, Teledyne Brown Engineering, and Teledyne Imaging Sensors will display their own complementary imaging technologies.

  • Teledyne Optech upgrades Lynx SG with 600 lines per second and real-time LAS file output

February 23, 2016 — Teledyne Optech is pleased to announce two critical performance upgrades designed to once again give a leading edge to users of its Optech Lynx SG and Lynx SG-S mobile survey systems. The programmable scan speed of the Lynx SG and SG-S has been increased by 20% — pushing the already industry-leading Lynx SG platform to 600 lines per second. In addition, all models in the Lynx mobile product line now output a real-time LAS file designed for in-field coverage checks and rapid access to the survey data.

“The maximum scanner speed remains the absolute bottleneck for high-resolution surveys, particularly at highway speeds,” said Albert Iavarone, Business Unit Manager at Teledyne Optech. “This 20% boost in scan performance translates directly into higher resolution data at the target, or the ability to collect data 20% faster. The Lynx SG was already the fastest survey-grade mobile system in the world at 500 lines per second. We focused on increasing it even further to 600 lines per second because that is where it matters most for the industry. Higher laser measurement rates are of modest value if the sensor cannot distribute those points in a uniform fashion and add point density along the track, where it is currently lacking. Increasing the laser rate and adding measurements across the track without simultaneously increasing the scan rate just results in large datasets that add no real value to the end user, while increasing processing time and costs for the service provider. By contrast, boosting the scan performance adds point density and true value to Lynx survey projects.” With support for up to 10 cameras, survey-grade lidar precision, continued industry-leading scanner performance, and a productivity-focused Optech LMS processing solution that provides for real-time calibration, boresight, trajectory optimization and control validation, the Lynx mobile survey system is the pre-eminent solution for transportation and civil engineering applications where accuracy matters.

  • Optech Titan wins Grand Award and Award for Technology Innovation at MAPPS 2016

    Teledyne Optech_Titan_Award
Key Teledyne Optech personnel accept the two awards from MAPPS Executive Director John Palatiello, left. (Image courtesy of MAPPS)

February 9, 2016 — Teledyne Optech is pleased to announce that its Optech Titan multispectral airborne lidar has won both the Grand Award and the Award for Technology Innovation at the 9th Annual MAPPS Geospatial Products and Services Excellence Awards. The judges presented the awards to Teledyne Optech in a ceremony at the MAPPS 2016 Winter Conference in Henderson, NV on February 3rd.
As the world’s first commercial multispectral lidar, the Titan impressed judges by using three channels at different wavelengths to open up brand-new applications for lidar surveying, including automated target classification. By merging the point clouds from all three lidar channels (532, 1064, and 1550 nm), surveyors can now determine the relative reflectance of targets along each wavelength. Teledyne Optech’s partners have already developed algorithms for differentiating soil, asphalt, grass, trees, and buildings using Titan’s multispectral data, and have even identified trees by their genus.
The judges also noted that the Titan gives surveyors the flexibility to handle topographic and bathymetric surveying with the same sensor, unlike single-channel lidar systems, which force operators to choose either land or water surveying. In a single flight, operators can efficiently survey topography from high altitude using the Titan’s infrared (1064 and 1550 nm) channels, then use its green (532 nm) channel to survey shallow coastal and inland waters at depths down to 22 meters.
Finally, the judges were impressed by the Titan sensor head’s compact design, which contains an embedded medium-format digital camera for collecting co-aligned imagery, and fits in a standard 16” gyro-stabilized mount to improve efficiency and data quality.
“Teledyne Optech’s ALTM Titan is a marvel in lidar engineering,” said Robert “Bob” Burtch, PS, CP, Professor Emeritus at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, and chairman of the panel of judges. “This development allows the collection of bathymetric lidar, topographic lidar and multispectral lidar in one single sensor.”
“We are very proud to have the Titan acknowledged for its innovative design and revolutionary new applications,” said Michel Stanier, Chief Operating Officer at Teledyne Optech. “We have led the lidar industry for over 40 years, and these awards confirm our place on the cutting edge of lidar development.”
