Event Highlights

The National Geomatics Expo 2024 offers a wide range of programs tailored to the various interests within the geospatial sector. Following are the highlights of the program.

buildingSMART Canada Annual BIM Summit

Being held in Western Canada for the first time, the Expo is proud to host the national Annual Summit for buildingSMART Canada. The summit’s theme, ‘Digital Transformation of the Built Environment’, highlights the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with cutting-edge geospatial technologies, and aims to bring together professionals from the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) industries and leaders in geomatics.

Geomatics for Public Good

The program will highlight how Canadian public service leaders are using geospatial technologies to drive positive change and improve the lives of citizens. Featuring presentations and case studies from government departments and agencies, the program demonstrates the integration of geomatics in tackling modern challenges and enhancing transparency.

A highlight of the program will be the keynote by Dr. Gordon “Oz” Osinski, a distinguished Professor at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Osinski, known for his expertise in planetary geology and impact cratering, will provide fascinating insights into the future of geomatics and its applications in planetary science.

Key areas of focus include disaster management, urban planning, environmental conservation, public health, transportation, land management, and natural resource management. The program also explores how geospatial technologies are being applied in crisis response, infrastructure maintenance, demographic analysis, and understanding the human footprint on the environment.

Geospatial AI

The Geospatial AI Program will explore cutting-edge advancements in geospatial artificial intelligence and machine learning and how they are helping solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Bryn Fosburgh, Senior Vice President of Trimble, will deliver a keynote on the essential human element in AI-enabled geomatics applications, emphasizing the integration of human expertise and technology.

The program will cover topics such as mapping and modeling techniques, computer vision algorithms, IoT devices, and sensor technologies. It will also explore the role of big data and cloud computing in geospatial data processing, with applications in public health, conservation, and urban planning.

Hydrospatial Advances

The Hydrospatial for Water Resilience Program will explore how geospatial technologies enhance water resilience. The program focuses on integrating geomatics in flood risk management, bathymetry, and water datasets.

Sessions Include:

  • Alberta’s Flood Hazard and Fluvial Hazard Identification Initiatives: An overview of Alberta’s flood hazard studies, including over 1,600 kilometers of new flood maps and the alluvial fan inventory, supporting emergency management and flood protection.
  • Advancing The Flood Hazard Identification And Mapping Program (FHIMP): Insights into FHIMP’s progress, including new regional models using AI, aimed at improving flood hazard data dissemination and adaptation.
  • Mapping and Managing Resources in the Marine Environment: A look at subsea acoustic sensors and their role in bathymetry and resource management, offering a comprehensive view of marine environments.
  • The New Canadian Hydrospatial Network (CHN): Presentation on CHN’s advancements over the National Hydrographic Network, enhancing hydrological models with high-resolution data.
  • Riparian Web Portal: Harnessing Geomatics for Watershed Conservation: Exploration of the Riparian Web Portal’s role in riparian health, featuring interactive GIS assessments and community-driven resources.

Reality Capture & Digital Twins

The program will be spearheaded by Carina Butterworth, an instructor at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), and Alex Hill-Stosky, Reality Capture Development and Regulation Manager at Eagle Engineering and Consulting.

Pete Kelsey’s keynote at the National Geomatics Expo is a must-attend for anyone in reality capture. As a pioneer in the field, he’ll share cutting-edge insights and real-world applications that will inspire and inform professionals. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a leader and stay ahead in the industry.

Hill-Stosky will lead discussions on how reality capture technologies are revolutionizing various industries. The program will explore innovations in quasi-terrestrial lidar, including terrestrial, kinematic, human-carried, robotic, and mobile scanners, as well as advancements in photogrammetry with UAVs and mobile systems.

Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS)

The RPAS Program will explore the transformative role of UAVs/drones in the geospatial industry. This year’s program will focus on innovative applications, technological advancements, and evolving regulatory frameworks shaping the RPAS landscape.

Key areas of focus include RPAS sensor development and data fusion with other sensors; application areas, regulatory advancements and applications in GNSS-denied environments, among others.

Subsurface Utility Engineering Advances

The program will explore the latest developments and innovations in subsurface utility engineering. Led by Peter Srajer, a distinguished geomatics engineer and advisory committee member, this expanded track builds on the success of the 2023 expo.

The highlights of the program include effective collection of subsurface utilities data, advanced mapping and modeling techniques, and the application of geospatial technologies in utilities. It will also cover critical infrastructure protection, the latest sensor technologies such as ground penetrating radar, and the integration of AI and machine learning for data analysis.

World Geospatial Industry Council Earth Observation Program

The dynamic Earth Observation Program will highlight the role of earth observation technologies in advancing our understanding of the planet and showcase the latest advancements and applications in environmental monitoring, natural resource management, and disaster response. The program will delve into how earth observation technologies integrate with geomatics to drive innovation and practical solutions in geospatial sciences.

Canada’s National Geomatics Expo 2024 Registration

The Canada Maps Program

Charting New Territories: Collaborative Cartography program at the Canadian Cartographic Association (CCA) Conference is a key event in the Canadian geomatics calendar.  The initiative, a collaboration between the International Map Industry Association (IMIA), the Canadian Cartographic Association, and GoGeomatics Canada, highlights the power of partnership in advancing cartography.

The traveling gallery, which begins collecting submissions at various events throughout the year, will be featured prominently at the National Geomatics Expo in Calgary. The project includes key stops at GeoIgnite Ottawa, CCA Toronto, and IMIA Denver, culminating in a full display at the Expo.

CanSLAM

This year SLAM Scan-Off will be a centerpiece at the GoGeomatics Expo in Calgary. Founded by Alex Hill-Stosky and Carina Butterworth, the CanSLAM Circuit is making significant strides in SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology.

SLAM enables real-time mapping and localization through tools like LiDAR and 360-degree cameras, and is crucial for creating accurate 3D maps with wide-ranging applications in fields such as urban planning and construction. The CanSLAM Circuit addresses several challenges in the SLAM industry, including system variability and performance metrics, will highlight the latest advancements in the field, with results announced during the event.
