SAIT hosted their BGIS (Bachelor of Applied Technology Geographic Information Systems) / GNT (Geomatics Network Team) industry night on 29 January 2026. I was really glad to attend as a guest. The purpose of the event was to connect emerging BGIS, GNT and Civil student professionals with industry professionals. That’s very important for the health of our sector and SAIT does a great job at this. Getting early involvement in career searches and networking with local Canadian businesses is a major asset for new graduates. Bridging the gap between graduation and career employment is something that has tremendous value moving into the working force. Networking is a key skill to develop early in career journeys.

The event helped showcase company projects, culture, and career opportunities to students and graduates. The event was well organized and saw a big turnout, from students, teachers, department heads, large Canadian companies, and sponsors such as Measurement Sciences Inc. (Titanium Sponsor) and Integrated Geomatics (Platinum Sponsor). Overall, this industry night helped strengthen partnerships between SAIT, BGIS, GNT students with Industry professionals.

SAIT being one of the last few technical geomatics schools in western Canada makes this a tremendous achievement for the geospatial community. Seeing the geospatial community come together to support the industry and growth is how the trade can maintain and grow.
With the success of the first official SAIT BGIS / GNT Industry Night, there are high hopes the succeeding events will grow from here.
