Session: David Harper – Director General – ECCC – Talk: Space-Based Earth Observation in Canada – A Vision for the Future
Session Date: July 22, 2020.
Speaker: David Harper, Director General, Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC)
If you missed out on David Harper’s session during GeoIgnite in July, here is another opportunity to watch. Harper is the Director General of ECCC and he spoke about the Government of Canada’s plans for Space-Based Earth Observation (SBEO) and why Canada’s investment in SBEO technologies is important.
SBEO technologies can benefit Canada and its citizens in many ways. Some applications include: new opportunities to improve the environment, agricultural practices and disease control; aid in allowing Canadian companies and researchers to be globally competitive; and, maintain national security.
Most notable was the invitation for stakeholder participation. The government hopes to engage stakeholders outside of the federal government to uncover the best pathways and perspective on the actions required to advance SBEO capabilities. The government wants us to take part in their plans and Harper invites us to read through their SBEO engagement paper, provide answers to 6 key questions and email any other comments.
Anyone who is interested in how SBEO could be used across a variety of industries and learn how this will help better society will enjoy this presentation.
